Sony’s New PlayStation VR Aims to Solve User Pain Points

The CUH-ZVR1 has been pretty successful since its release last year. Sales for Sony's first entry into the VR market hit a million units sold within the first few months of its launch. Now, Sony is updating the CUH-ZVR1 VR to make its design a little bit more efficient by improving the VR’s design flaw that forced users to disconnect the unit in order to view HDR content on the PS4 console.

They plan to relocated the new PlayStation VR headset headphone jack from the wire hanging from the headset to the back of the model, which they hope will make for a cleaner and more integrated design than what they previously had.

Here’s what the PlayStation Blog had to say about the new VR and how it differs from its predecessor:

“A hardware update to PlayStation VR is being prepared. The new version, model number CUH-ZVR2, features an updated design that enables the stereo headphone cables to be integrated with the VR headset and a slimmer, streamlined connection cable. There’s also an updated Processor Unit that supports HDR pass through, enabling users to enjoy HDR-compatible PS4 content on a TV without having to disconnect the Processor Unit in between the TV and the PS4 system. This function can be used only when the VR headset is turned off.”

The updated PlayStation VR headset is being called the CUH-ZVR2 and it's said that it will be released in Japan on October 14th in a bundle with the PlayStation Camera. The bundle is prices at ¥44,980, which is $400 in the United States.

Sony promises that the VR will be released in the United States and that they will not change the bundle’s price. However, Sony didn’t specify when it will come to the United States.
