Today is press day in Las Vegas and for the International CES. Many press conferences are being held in the grand rooms of hotels and conference space. But among those announcements from CEOs and celebrities, press releases will be pouring in consistently. The first you'll see here is from LaCie, a storage mainstay and innovator. They deserve a double take since they're introducing a limited edition hard drive known as the Blade Runner.
It's no Sci-Fi, but has the design roots from the 1982 movie to make it outstanding on any typical desk. The exterior is several metal plates evenly slicing a "liquid" metallic form, conjuring an image of technology that is soon to spread beyond its cage. The design from Starck is much more mainstream on the inside, bringing 4TB and USB 3.0 speed to the desktop. At nearly 4.5 lb. the Blade Runner is sure to provide quality functionality as a $300 hard drive with warranty for two years.
With aluminum making up the exterior and resemblances to the cooling mechanisms in computers, the Blade Runner should be well-prepared for the rigors of standard work, and the energy savings are a great modern touch – an LED cross will glow orange when powered, and green when it's saving 75 percent of its power usage in Eco Mode. Since these appear to be out of stock already, you might be hard-pressed to collect a Blade Runner, but LaCie will still have other products including Thunderbolt-enabled drives to collect your data.
