HP Announces New DVD Movie Writer

Reprinted from a HP press release:

HP today introduced its newest DVD Movie Writer, the dc4000, with all the components a savvy consumer could want: an 8x DVD writer, updated and enhanced software, and dual-format capability for greater flexibility.

The HP DVD Movie Writer dc4000 lets consumers more easily convert their outdated VHS and other analog videotapes to DVD while helping to ensure compatibility with most DVD players and DVD-ROM drives. Writing speeds of the dc4000 are 8x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD+RW and 4x DVD-RW.

“HP is responsive to what our customers want and is committed to developing DVD technology that gives them greater video-editing flexibility and simplified video writing,” said Steve Johnson, DVD product manager, Personal Systems Group, HP. “The HP DVD Movie Writer dc4000 simplifies and speeds up the process of writing and editing video, photos, data and music. The updated software package also makes it much easier to create entertaining DVDs to share with family and friends.”

Connected to a desktop or notebook PC through the USB port, the HP DVD Movie Writer is designed to transfer VHS and other analog tapes and create digital negatives on long-lasting DVD discs. It can convert video from a variety of formats including VHS, Hi8, Digital 8 and BetaMax, as long as the appropriate format player has analog output jacks. The DVD Movie Writer also is designed to function as a standard DVD/CD writer to burn music, photos and data to DVD and CD.

After the Movie Writer converts analog tapes to the digital MPEG-2 format — the same format all commercially available DVDs are written to — consumers can edit and share their DVD masterpieces with friends and family. And users can get as detailed as they want in editing their DVDs. The DVD Movie Writer ships with a full suite of video-editing software, including ArcSoft ShowBiz 2.1, a full editing package, and muvee autoProducer, a quick and easy music video editing application.

ArcSoft ShowBiz 2.1 lets consumers add or delete scenes, add music or special effects and create slideshows set to music. Easy-to-use screens allow users to drag and drop video clips, digital photos and music files in either storyboard or simple timeline editing format. muvee autoProducer is a fun and easy editing package that quickly turns digital movies into music videos with a few clicks of a mouse.

The HP DVD Movie Writer dc4000 also includes an enhanced video transfer wizard that simplifies the transfer of multiple tapes or clips to a single DVD and allows for improved background processing, which saves project time. Other software updates include the 6.5 version of RecordNow and ArcSoft PhotoBase 4.5 to create, organize and burn photo slideshows.

The HP DVD Movie Writer also comes with software to help save data, video or music on DVDs and CDs, including Veritas RecordNow and Simple Backup. SimpleBackup reliably backs up, protects and restores individual files or folders and helps restore an entire PC hard drive. Additionally, Cyberlink PowerDVD software makes it easy to play DVD movies on a PC.

“The Movie Writer is an easy way to relive and revive home videos,” said Johnson. “This is a great device that gives family members the opportunity to function as actors, producers, directors and editors to produce home movies theyll enjoy for years to come.”

The HP DVD Movie Writer dc4000 is expected to be available at major retail outlets in the United States and through hpshopping.com in April at an estimated U.S. street price of $299.
