microphone for a sports backboard

I wanted to record the sound of a basketball striking the backboard. The first attempt with a lav mic was terrible, just a squeal of static. What is the nature of a drum microphone?
Buying a musicians instrument seems to be 100s of dollars, with uncertain result.
