Panasonic's EVA1 gets 4K 60P 10-bit capture

The new free Version 3.0 firmware update for Panasonic’s EVA1 will upgrade the camera’s capabilities with 10-bit 4K capture at 60 fps

If you aren’t familiar with the EVA1, it’s a 5.7K cinema camera that uses a Super-35mm sensor featuring 14-stops of dynamic range, Dual Native ISO ratings of 800 and 2500. IN addition to expanded 4K capabilities, the firmware update will also give the EVA1 hardware remote control through USB-Ethernet adapters and a user button function for quick switching of shooting modes and frame rates.

This is the seventh firmware since the EVA1’s been released, but this won’t be the last. Panasonic says that there will be more in the future.

“With its small size and weight combined with great features, the EVA1 represents the best value in its class,” said Mitch Gross, Cinema Product Manager. “New features like 4K60p 10-bit and hardwire Ethernet connectivity for remote control expand the use for new clients, while Quick Switch between setup files is an improvement based on specific requests from current users. Panasonic is committed to continually improving and expanding the capabilities of the EVA1.”

Here’s what the update brings to the EVA1

The Version 3.0 update adds High Efficiency Video Coding H.265 recording for 4K 10-bit recording up to 60 frames per second at 200 Mbps, which can be recorded to V30-class SDXC cards.

The benefits of using HEVC H.265 means you’ll be getting twice the efficiency of H.264. HEVC H.265 allows the camera to shoot 4K 30p 10-bit recording at 150 Mbps and 4K 60p 10-bit recording at 200Mbps.

Also, the EVA1’s USB port now supports serval third party USB-LAN adapters. This will ultimately allow you to control the camera with a hardwired remote over Ethernet from Android and iOS devices.

You should also see faster changes to camera settings on the EVA1 thanks to Quick Switch, which adds User Button shortcuts.

Also added

We’re also going to see a focus position indicator in meters or feet displayed on-screen. HDMI outputs can also be individually set to show in HDR or SDR when recording or playing back Hyper Log Gamma.

There’s also now a second Auto White Balance memory position. That should allow for quick scrolling to two AWB selections and up to eight preset white balances.
