FAA opens online testing for Part 107-certified drone pilots

It’s taken a while to get here. After issuing two delays, the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) launching its Remote ID training. The program launches on April 6th.

Ultimately, the Remote ID training will make it easier for Part 107-certified drone pilots to renew their ID. Thanks to the new program, these pilots can renew online. Originally, this program was launching on March 1st. However, after two delays

No need for in-person Part 107 FAA testing

Up until now, pilots with a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification needed to take an in-person test every two years to keep their licenses to fly drones commercially. In total, there are about 700 FAA testing centers across the US and pilots have to get at least a 70% to pass. It took planning and some cash to take the test. The in-person tests cost the pilots $150 to take it. The online test is free and will send a digital certificate of completion.

Additionally, the FAA has updated some of the questions on the test. For instance, it now includes new rules for flying drones at night.

Remote ID training launches next week

We only have a few more days until the program launches. However, if you just so happen to have a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification and to renew before the 6th, here are your options. According to Drone Girl, you can wait for the 5th. Part 107 certification doesn’t expire, so you can renew it whenever you want. You just need to make sure you don’t fly your drone commercially before you renew.

You can access the online test here on April 6th.
