Nikon Z5II review: A budget camera that knows exactly what it is

Nikon’s Z5II aims to make full-frame feel effortless. It takes the bones of the original Z5 and upgrades the brains, bringing pro-level processing, reliable autofocus and bright monitoring to an affordable body.

At first glance, it looks like another entry-level full-frame mirrorless, but a closer look reveals something more. Let’s discuss what that is.

Quick take

The Z5II is a confident upgrade to Nikon’s entry full frame. You get the EXPEED 7 processor, nine-subject detection with 3D-tracking, prerelease capture and an EVF bright enough to shoot in the sun. 4K/60p comes with a crop and the HDMI is micro. For hybrid creators, weddings and documentary shooters who want reliable autofocus, strong stabilization and cheap media, it’s an easy pick.

Core specs

The Nikon Z5II centers on a 24.5-megapixel full-frame BSI CMOS sensor paired with the EXPEED 7 processor, the same chip found in Nikon’s higher-end bodies. Together, they deliver faster processing, cleaner low-light performance, along with a smoother subject tracking.

Video tops out at 4K/60p with a crop or Full HD up to 120p, and you can record internally in 10-bit H.265 or 12-bit N-RAW. These are rare options for a camera in this price class. Autofocus recognizes nine subject types, including people, animals and vehicles, with detection down to −10 EV. The 3D-tracking system and AF-A mode help the camera adapt automatically as subjects move.

A five-axis in-body stabilizer provides up to 7.5 stops of shake reduction, backed by Focus-Point VR for added precision. Shooters get up to 14 frames per second (fps) with the mechanical shutter or 30 fps in JPEG burst, plus prerelease capture. The 3.69 M-dot OLED EVF hits a bright 3,000 nits for outdoor shooting and the 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD makes framing flexible. Dual UHS-II SD card slots keep media affordable, while 3.5 mm mic and headphone ports, a micro-HDMI and USB-C with Power Delivery round out the I/O. Power comes from the familiar EN-EL15c battery, good for around 310–380 shots or up to two hours of video.

Price and position

The Z5II is $1,850 body-only, with common kits bundling the 24–50 mm, 24–200 mm zooms, or the new 24-105 mm. That plants it squarely in the “serious beginner to enthusiast” lane, below Nikon’s Z6-class bodies and across the aisle from Canon’s EOS R8/R6 II, Sony’s a7C II/a7 IV and Panasonic’s S5 II.

Recent tariffs have nudged U.S. imaging prices up and down, so street pricing can move. Always check the number on the day you buy.

Where the Z5II outdoes its price tag

You can record 10-bit H.265 (a high-quality, efficient video format) and 12-bit N-RAW (Nikon’s RAW video) internally to UHS-II SD cards. It has flexible color without the need to invest in more expensive CFexpress cards.

Image quality

In terms of the camera’s resolution and detail, the 24.5-megapixel BSI sensor delivers crisp detail. In stills, the files are flexible; in video, color holds up well under 10-bit H.265 and better still in N-RAW. Skin tones look natural under Nikon’s standard Picture Controls. If you prefer to grade, N-Log with supported LUTs delivers predictable latitude.

For dynamic range, still shooters get room to push and pull highlights and shadows. For video, 10-bit H.265 and N-RAW provide extra highlight recovery and smoother roll-off in post within the limits of a compact, entry-tier body.

Rolling shutter and moiré: Electronic shutter at high frame rates can show skew on fast pans; N-RAW and H.265 modes differ in readout behavior, so test your worst-case scenarios if you shoot sports, whip pans or LED walls.

High frame rate and slow motion

Full HD 120p delivers natural 5× slow-mos. Autofocus support and audio vary by mode, so plan your HFR shots as MOS (no sync sound) in most cases. Expect a resolution/detail drop compared to 4K; it intercuts fine for B-roll and reveals, especially with a bit of sharpening and noise removal in post.

Monitoring: the big usability win

The EVF is rated at 3,000 nits. “Nits” measure brightness. So, more nits in a display means it’s easier to see outside. In bright sun, we judged exposure and white balance through the EVF without needing to cup my hand. This improved my ability to capture faster with fewer takes. The rear screen is a vari-angle design (flip-out) that helps for shooting a vlog, at low angles or overhead. This is a great quality-of-life upgrade.

Autofocus

With a newer brain along with its better reflexes, the Z5II delivers faster, smarter and more reliable autofocus than the original Z5. It detects nine subject types (people, pets, birds, cars, bikes, motorcycles, trains, planes). 3D tracking lets you pick a subject and have the autofocus (AF) follow it across the frame. AF-A will switch between single and continuous focus for you when your subject starts moving. 

In plain use, like talking heads, product shots and action at walking speed, the AF did what we asked. It’s not Z8-level sticky on fast subjects, but it is a clear step up from the original Z5.

Stabilization and handheld reality

IBIS (in-body image stabilization: a moving sensor that fights shake) is rated up to 7.5 stops for supported lenses. For handheld B-roll, walk-and-talks, and event coverage, it helps. Electronic VR is available on the Z5II, but it applies a crop and is usually outperformed by post stabilization. 

If you shoot long telephoto, brace, exhale and if you need to walk, use a soft walk. IBIS helps, but physics still apply.

Codecs, frame rates and heat

The Z5II’s video options hit a sweet balance between flexibility and practicality. Its full-frame 4K at 24 to 30 frames per second delivers crisp, detailed footage and stable performance without thermal issues, making it ideal for most creators. Step up to 4K/60p for smoother motion, but expect a crop. It’s great for close-ups or action, though you’ll want to plan wider shots ahead. For slow motion, Full HD 120p gives natural five-times playback. It’s softer than 4K, but still perfectly usable for stylized sequences or B-roll.

Nikon also brings serious codec flexibility to the table. The 10-bit H.265 option balances image quality and file size, especially if your editing system supports hardware decoding. For deeper color work, 12-bit N-RAW recording captures impressive tonal range and grading latitude rarely seen at this price point. You’ll need fast V90 SD cards and a disciplined workflow, but the payoff is huge — footage that grades like it came from a much higher-end camera.

In real-world use, the Z5II handled long 4K sessions without overheating, though extra airflow and external power are smart adds for extended shoots. For lighter setups, 10-bit H.265 remains the sweet spot, delivering excellent color and manageable files even on modest systems. Pair that with N-RAW’s flexibility, and the Z5II becomes a stealth A-cam for indie projects or a cost-efficient B-cam beside a Z8 or Z9, sharing their color science while running on cheaper media.

Prerelease capture, bursts and the buffer

Prerelease capture continuously buffers frames while you half-press the shutter, then saves the moments leading up to the full press. For video shooters who also grab stills, it’s a clever way to catch the exact start of the action.

Audio and I/O

You get 3.5 mm mic and 3.5 mm headphone jacks with on-screen meters. The headphone jack can also act as a remote port, which is clever on a small body. USB-C handles data, charging and Power Delivery (PD). For long events and streams, PD is the move.

For streaming, the camera supports UVC/UAC over USB. That means simple, driver-free webcam use at good quality.

Storage and workflow

Two UHS-II SD slots keep media affordable and let you record proxy files in-camera. This matters to wedding and event shooters. If you plan to lean on N-RAW, buy name-brand V90 cards and carry spares. The fast EVF and AF help you shoot more; plan a file system that keeps up.

Build, power and ergonomics

The grip and controls feel like other Z bodies. The vari-angle screen helps single-operator video. The body is weather-sealed to Nikon’s Z standard. The EN-EL15c battery is common across Nikon bodies and supports USB-C charging and PD power. We could run long recordings from a USB-C brick. That keeps the rig small.

But do you really need to shoot below f/4? With modern sensors and stabilization, that extra stop or two costs more than its needed. Unless ultra-shallow depth of field is your signature, skip the pricey f/2.8 glass; you’ll rarely need it.

Marketplace

The Sony a7 IV costs $2,700. It offers oversampled 4K30, deep color tools and a vast lens catalog. Costs more. Media is a CFexpress/SD mix. AF feel is excellent; in typical entry-level use, the Z5II’s subject modes and 3D-tracking make it competitive. If you live in S-Cinetone or need Sony’s external ecosystem, the a7 IV stays strong. If you want internal N-RAW to SD, Nikon is unique here.

The Canon EOS R6 II costs $2,300. It has uncropped 4K60 and excellent AF, but at a higher price. Some workflows juggle SD + CFexpress. Canon color is wonderful; Nikon answers with N-Log, LUT support and cloud “recipes.”

The Panasonic S5 II costs $2,000. It has the best video assists in class and modern PDAF, with strong IBIS. Subject-mode variety and people/pet tracking stickiness still favor Nikon if your work centers on faces and animals.

All lens ecosystems are all healthy now. Your decision will hinge on color preference, AF behavior and workflow needs. If low media cost and internal RAW matter, the Z5II stands out.

Clear limitations

Every camera in this class comes with trade-offs, and the Z5II is no exception. Shooting 4K at 60 frames per second applies a crop, so you’ll need to reframe or use wider glass to maintain the same field of view. The micro-HDMI port also demands care; it’s small, fragile and best protected with a cage or clamp if you plan to rig the camera for video. Rolling shutter can appear during fast pans or when shooting LED screens, so slow down your movements or adjust your setup to minimize distortion.

Recording N-RAW directly to SD cards is impressive but pushes the limits of the format. To keep performance stable, you’ll need fast, name-brand V90 cards and a disciplined backup routine. None of these limitations are unusual for a sub-$2,000 full-frame hybrid, but they’re worth knowing upfront. Plan around them, and the Z5II will reward you with results that punch above its price.

Verdict

The Nikon Z5II is not the most advanced video camera in its class. It does not try to be. It’s a workable video tool with a standout EVF, modern AF, real 10-bit and RAW to SD and a low total cost of ownership. If you can live with the 4K/60p crop and micro-HDMI, you get a small body that meets a lot of real-world needs.

For budget-minded video shooters who value monitoring, media cost and simple rigs, the Z5II is worth a serious look. For speed and top-end codecs, move up to the Z6 III.
