Most likely cause of dropping frames is dirty heads and or a bad tape.
I’ve had a tape that would seem to playback normal images but the tape was damaged and if you looked close you could see a very small flaw.
This "small" flaw caused no frames in my editor.
It is possible that there is some connection issue with your camera’s firewire port but you should see some type of loss connection error message when you are downloading frm the camera to the computer…
I really don’t think the problem is in your computers.
I would rule out some stuff first:
Clean your heads or better yet, have them cleaned.
Try a new tape after your heads are cleaned.
