I’d suggest you try decreasing the bit rate of the MPG2 files you are writing to the DVD. Computers have to emulate the actions of a DVD player while maintaining the bit rate off the DVD. If your DVD doesn’t have a lot of video on it, the usual default of DVD authoring software is to use the maximum bit rate for DVD players. But decreasing the default bit rate will let the computer keep up with the video output.

You might also want to check out how many background activities your computer is busy with. A friend of mine had the video playback on his computer grind to a halt. As it turned out, he’d installed an animated wallpaper which was monopolizing his processor cycles. So you may want to try playing the DVD on a faster computer to see how it works there.
