Foam core is a winner. An umbrella is also very useful for distributing soft light widely for fill. Lowel makes good ones and I’ve seen DYI umbrellas using a real rainy day umbrella lined with aluminum foil. It’s pretty harsh for indoor lighting but works well for highlights outdoors.
Indoors the ceiling or a light colored wall, lit by a softbox, works very well. So does a white sheet hung on an off-camera wall.
