Xiaomi announces Xiaomi 14 Series smartphones with new HyperOS

Xiaomi has announced its latest smartphone range, the Xiaomi 14 Series. At launch, there are two models, the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro, as well as a new operating system, HyperOS.

Xiaomi 14

The base model has a 6.36-inch C8 AMOLED screen with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. This means that you can see the screen even in direct sunlight and it also supports Dolby Vision HDR. The screen has a variable refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120 Hz and the pixel density has also been enhanced to 460 ppi. In addition, the Xiaomi 14 is powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform processor.

The Xiaomi 14’s main camera uses a new Light Fusion 900 image sensor. This is a 50-megapixel, 1/1.3-inch sensor which Xiaomi says has a dynamic range of 13.5 stops. The main camera also has an aperture of f1.6. In addition, the resolution of the Xiaomi 14’s ultra-wide angle camera has been upgraded to 50 MP. The third camera has a Leica 75 mm floating telephoto lens with a focus distance from 10 cm to infinity.

Other features

The Xiaomi 14 features a 4-mic array and stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos to deliver high-quality audio. The smartphone also has a USB 3.2 5 Gbps port, which promises a data transfer speed 10 times faster than the previous generation. In addition, the Xiaomi 14 has a 4610 mAh high energy-density battery. This supports 90W wired HyperCharge and 50W wireless HyperCharge for fast charging. The Xiaomi 14 comes in four colors: Jade Green, Black, White and Snow Mountain Pink.

Xiaomi 14 Pro

The Xiaomi 14 Pro has a 6.7-inch WQHD+ resolution C8 AMOLED screen with a pixel density of 522 ppi. Again, it offers a peak brightness of 3,000 nits and supports Dolby Vision HDR. The new smartphone also features Xiaomi Ceramic Glass. Xiaomi says that this delivers 10 times higher drop resistance and 1.25 times higher scratch resistance compared to regular glass.

The Pro version uses the same Light Fusion 900 image sensor as the Xiaomi 14. However, the main camera features an f/1.42 to f/4.0 variable aperture for the first time. Although it isn’t a big range, Xiaomi says that you can control depth of field and bokeh effects by adjusting the aperture. The Xiaomi 14 Pro also has the same wide-angle and telephoto cameras as the base model.

Other features

The Xiaomi 14 Pro has a USB 3.2 10 Gbps port which is double the speed of the Xiaomi 14. It also features the same 4-mic array and stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. The Xiaomi 14 Pro has a larger 4880 mAh high-capacity battery with 120W wired HyperCharge and 50 W wireless HyperCharge fast charging.

HyperOS

Xiaomi includes its new HyperOS operating system in its new 14 Series smartphones. The company says that its new operating system is a “human-centric, smart ecosystem for human, cars, and home.” In addition, Xiaomi says that the AI-powered HyperConnect framework gives the Xiaomi 14 Series real-time networking and high-speed connection. It also delivers capability sharing with your other Xiaomi devices. For example, the new Xiaomi Watch S3 smartwatch also operates on Xiaomi Hyper OS.

What we think

The Xiaomi 14 and 14 Pro smartphones offer a high specification at a relatively modest price. The bright 3,000 nits screens are also a welcome feature. However, we will have to wait and see whether the new HyperOS operating system is compatible with existing apps. Hopefully, the new smartphones will go on sale outside of China soon.

Pricing and availability

The Xiaomi 14 and 14 Pro smartphones are currently only available to pre-order in China. The cheapest Xiaomi 14 costs 3,999 yuan ($550) and comes with 8 GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The top-of-the-range Xiaomi 14 model has 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage and retails at 4,999 yuan ($680). The basic Xiaomi 14 Pro smartphone costs the same but only has 12 GB RAM with 256 GB storage. If you want 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage in a Pro model you need to spend 5,999 yuan ($820). Finally, there’s a flagship Titanium variant of the Xiaomi 14 Pro which costs 6,499 yuan ($890).
