Vivo announces new flagship X300 Pro smartphone with Sony sensor

Vivo has announced its latest flagship smartphone, the Vivo X300 Pro. It has new high specification cameras that rival the previous top-of-the-range X200 Ultra model.

Zeiss cameras

The Vivo X300 Pro has three Zeiss rear cameras. Its 24 mm-equivalent main camera features a 50MP Sony LYT-828 1/1.28-inch sensor. This also offers a fast f/1.57 aperture and a gimbal-based optical image stabilization (OIS). Vivo says that this can provide more than 5 stops of stabilization. The 85mm-equivalent telephoto camera uses a new 200 MP 1/1.4-inch Samsung HPB sensor and has a f/2.67 aperture.

Plus, the rear 15mm-equivalent ultra-wide camera and the front-facing selfie camera both employ 50 MP Samsung JN1 sensors.

Video recording

All three rear cameras on the Vivo X300 Pro offer video recording in 4K at up to 120 frames per second (fps) in a 10-bit log format. However, you can also record 8K video at up to 30fps. If you drop the resolution down to 1080 HD, the maximum frame rate jumps up to 240 fps. In addition, the X300 Pro supports Dolby Vision HDR in some video formats. Sadly, there’s no option to add a memory card for recording video, so make sure you choose an option with enough built-in storage for your needs.

Specifications

The Vivo X300 Pro is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 SoC processor and Vivo’s V3+ imaging chip. It’s available in configurations with up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. The X300 Pro also features a 6.78-inch 1260 x 2800-pixel LTPO AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. This can deliver HDR10+, HDR Vivid and Dolby Vision with a peak screen brightness of 4,500 nits.

Additionally, the X300 Pro includes Bluetooth 6 and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity. The 6,510 mAh battery supports 90 W wired charging and 40 W wireless charging.

Other features

The Vivo X300 Pro measures 6.35 inches (161.2 mm) by 2.97 inches (75.5 mm) by 0.31 inches (8 mm) and weighs 7.97 oz (226 g). It has a glass front and back with an aluminum alloy frame that makes the phone IP68/IP69 dust-tight and water-resistant. The X300 Pro also features an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. There are stereo speakers built in, but no headphone jack. For an operating system, the X300 Pro uses OriginOS 6, which is Vivo’s version of Android. Also, the X300 Pro is compatible with Vivo’s optional telephoto extender. This is an optional 2.35x lens that attaches to the phone’s telephoto camera via a specially designed case and mount.

What we think

Vivo has set the bar high with the cameras on the X300 Pro. The main and telephoto cameras match and even exceed the specifications of the previous top-of-the-range X200 Ultra smartphone. Only the ultrawide camera in the X300 Pro fails to equal the X200 Ultra’s camera, as it has a smaller sensor. If Vivo decides to launch the X300 Pro around the world, it’s a tempting prospect for anyone looking for a smartphone with great cameras. However, the company is also due to launch an X300 Ultra in the new year, so you may want to wait to see what that has to offer.

Pricing and availability

The Vivo X300 Pro smartphone is available to pre-order in China, with the release scheduled for later this month. Pricing starts at CNY 5,299 (around $742) for the base 12 GB/256 GB model, rising to CNY 5,999 (around $840) for the highest specification 16 GB/1 TB version.
