Viltrox launches Raze AF full-frame prime lenses for the Ronin 4D

Viltrox has launched a set of six autofocus full-frame prime lenses for the DJI Ronin 4D camera. The Viltrox Raze AF Full-Frame Lens Set DL Mount For Ronin 4D feature the DL mount and a wide F1.8 maximum aperture.

Raze prime lenses

There are six prime lenses in the Raze set. You get focal lengths of 16 mm, 24 mm, 28 mm, 35 mm, 50 mm and 85 mm. The lenses are also lightweight, ranging from 11.1 ounces (316 g) to 16.7 ounces 473 g. As a result, Viltrox says that the lenses can be used with a gimbal without the need for counterweights.

DL mount

Viltrox has designed the Raze prime lenses with the DL mount for the DJI Ronin 4D. The lenses also feature a zero-gap structural design for effortless installation, rapid response and instant shooting readiness.Additionally, this ensures lossless transmission of electronic contact signals and synchronization with the gimbal’s stabilization algorithm.

The autofocus system Viltrox Raze prime lenses uses an STM silent motor with micron-level stepping precision. The autofocus system is also deeply integrated with the Ronin 4D’s LiDAR focusing system. This delivers precise subject tracking without the need for an external focus system.

Viltrox says that the Raze lenses have ultra-smooth focusing and minimize focus breathing.

Optical design

The Viltrox Raze prime lenses feature ED low-dispersion lens elements, high-refractive index lens elements and aspherical lens elements. Combined with nanometer-level multi-layer coatings, the optical design of the lenses suppresses chromatic aberration, distortion and edge aberrations. Viltrox says that the lenses also eliminate ghosting and flare in backlit conditions to preserve pure colors. Also, the Raze prime lenses offer sharp images from the center to the corners.

Wide maximum aperture

The Viltrox Raze prime lenses all feature a wide maximum aperture of F1.8. This makes the lenses ideal for shooting in low-light environments. They should also deliver a soft, natural shallow depth of field.

Other features

The Viltrox Raze prime lenses have a durable brass DL lens mount. They also feature a USB-C port for easy firmware updates. In addition, the front lens element has a waterproof and anti-smudge coating. The set of six lenses is supplied in a hard case and includes lens hoods for all lenses.

What we think

The DJI Ronin 4D is a very capable cinema camera. Around 70 percent of Alex Garland’s movie Civil War was shot on the camera last year. It’s therefore great to see Viltrox launching the Raze range of autofocus lenses. The wide maximum F1.8 aperture across all of the lenses will also be welcomed by low-light shooters and those who seek a shallow depth of field. Additionally, you don’t need an additional focus motor as with some third-party DL lenses. The Raze primes aren’t cheap, but you can pick up the set of six for around the same price as three of DJI’s lenses. Hopefully, Viltrox will make the lenses available to buy individually in the future as well. If you shoot with a DJI Ronin 4D, Viltrox’s new lenses could be a good investment.

Pricing and availability

The set of six Viltrox Raze AF full-frame prime lenses in DL Mount for the DJI Ronin 4D is available now. It retails at $3,699.
