Viltrox has launched a new full-frame 40mm F2.5 autofocus prime lens for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. It’s the same lens the company released with a Nikon Z-mount earlier this year.
Optical design
The new Viltrox 40mm prime lens is designed for full-frame cameras, but you can still use it on APS-C sensors. However, on a crop sensor camera, it will have an equivalent focal length of around 60mm. The lens is constructed with 10 elements in six groups. These include one extra-low dispersion (ED) element, three high refractive index (HR) elements, and one aspherical element. In addition, the lens features a nano-coating. Viltrox says this reduces ghosting and flare for clearer, more contrast-rich images.
Wide maximum aperture
The new Viltrox 40mm prime lens has a maximum aperture of F2.5, which should give good low-light performance and make it easier to achieve a shallow depth of field. The iris uses a 7-blade design; however, Viltrox claims that it still delivers a “beautiful bokeh” in out-of-focus areas.
Autofocus
The autofocus system on the new Viltrox 40mm lens uses an STM (stepping motor). The company says this delivers fast and quiet autofocus. In addition, Viltrox says the lens displays minimal focus breathing, which is great for video use. Focus breathing occurs when the image size changes slightly as you pull focus. The 40mm lens also supports eye and face AF modes on Sony cameras. The minimum focus distance is just over 13 inches (0.34 meters).
Build
The new Viltrox 40mm prime lens is lightweight at only 5.9 ounces (167 grams). It’s also compact, measuring 2.4 inches (59.5 mm) in length and 2.6 inches (65 mm) in diameter. Despite its size, Viltrox says the lens has a robust construction for long-lasting durability. It also has a weather-resistant design with an anti-fouling coating on the front glass. The filter size is 52 mm, and the lens comes with a small petal-style lens hood.
What we think
A 40mm lens is an underused focal length. It’s considered closer to how we see the world with our eyes than a standard 50mm lens. A 40mm lens is also a great all-purpose focal length. Viltrox’s new 40mm prime lens has a relatively wide maximum aperture of F2.5, so you will be able to achieve a shallow depth of field when it’s wide open. It will also perform well in low light. One of the best features of Viltrox’s new lens is its low price. If you are looking for a 40mm prime lens, the Viltrox is a great budget option to consider.
