TechSmith has released new versions of its Snagit and Camtasia screen recording tools. The latest editions have been boosted with AI and what the company calls Screentelligence.
Snagit and Camtasia
Snagit is a tool that you can use to capture screenshots and simple video screen recordings. You can also edit your images and add text, all within the program. Camtasia is a much more advanced screen recorder but is video only. However, it includes much more advanced video editing features. These include drag-and-drop animations, transitions, effects, and backgrounds. Camtasia even offers closed captioning for your videos.
Screentelligence and Snagit 2025 new features
“We’ve enhanced Snagit and Camtasia with new AI and Screentelligence features to make it faster and easier for users to achieve their creative goals,” said Tony Lambert, CTO of TechSmith. Screentelligence uses machine learning models and TechSmith’s proprietary algorithms to give you context-aware layout, design, and editing suggestions. It also analyzes your metadata locally. This improves speed and security as the data never leaves your user environment.
Snagit 2025 uses AI and Screentelligence-powered features to perform nearly all of the creation work. TechSmith says that this means you can focus on refining your content. The company says that the new features also enhance creation speed and engage their audience more effectively.
Step Capture
With Step Capture, you can quickly create visual how-to guides and step-by-step instructions. You simply go through the process, while Snagit captures the individual steps and clicks. The program then automatically organizes them into a structured guide.
Smart Redact
The Smart Redact feature automatically detects and blurs, pixelates or redacts nine types of sensitive information from an image. This includes mailing addresses, as well as credit card or phone numbers.
Background Noise Removal
Now you can capture great audio wherever you are. TechSmith says that Snagit can remove background noise in any environment, whether you are at home, in the office or even at a coffee shop.
Corner Rounding
Snagit can round the corners of your screen captures for a softer, more modern aesthetic.
Instant asset access
You can now access Snagit’s comprehensive Asset Library with just a single click.
Virtual Background Capabilities
Snagit can now blur or change the background of your webcam during video recordings. A note for Windows users: This feature is Mac only.
Customizable Share Link
Snagit now has single-click share link functionality with existing corporate platforms and environments such as OneDrive or Google Drive. However, this is an enterprise exclusive feature.
Camtasia 2025 new features
Camtasia 2025 now includes advanced AI and editing capabilities to help you deliver more polished and professional videos in a fraction of the time.
Background Noise Removal
As with Snagit, you can now clean up your audio from recordings made in noisy environments
Dynamic Caption Editing
You can now manually adjust, add or remove words and spaces in the dynamic captions feature instead of relying solely on the transcription.
Smarter, More Engaging Cursor Movements
Camtasia 2025 includes advanced cursor enhancements to improve clarity, engagement and instructional value in your videos.
Cursor Motion Blur
This feature smooths your onscreen cursor movements for a more natural, polished look. It also minimizes any visible hesitations or unnatural pauses during screen recording.
Kinetic Cursor
Kinetic Cursor cleverly enhances cursor movement by dynamically pointing in the direction of the next click. This is a great way to guide your viewers’ attention more effectively. The feature was also ranked in the top five most important characteristics of training videos in TechSmith’s 2024 Video Viewer Trends Report.
Cursor Elevation
This feature brings your cursor to the front of the screen, so it is never hidden behind other annotations, layers or effects.
AI Avatars
If you have Camtasia Pro, you can now use a diverse selection of human avatars to deliver your video messages.
What we think
The 2025 releases of Snagit and Camtasia have some great enhancements to make your life easier and speed up your workflow. TechSmith also says that many of the new features have been inspired by user feedback. If you are a content creator looking to make tutorial videos, both programs have something to offer. However, some users may be disappointed by TechSmith’s decision to move to a subscription-based model going forward. If you prefer to own your software outright, Snagit 2025 and Camtasia 2025 will be your last chance to do so.
Pricing and availability
Snagit 2025 and Camtasia 2025 are available for an annual subscription. TechSmith has said that the 2025 versions are the final annual releases. After this, the company is transitioning to continuous delivery through its new subscription offerings.
