Sony reveals its longest reaching prime lens: FE 600mm F4 GM

Sony’s just revealed a new flagship full-frame prime for its G Master lens series. That lens is the new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS super-telephoto prime lens.

Sony notes that this is the brand’s longest reaching prime lens, and it sports some of the most “advanced optical and mechanical technologies.” But this isn’t the only new lens Sony has announced. The company also revealed the FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS. It’s a super-telephoto zoom lens that Sony claims to be the “furthest reaching E-mount zoom.”

Let’s take a look at both:

FE 600mm F4 GM

Weighing about 6.71 lbs, Sony says the 600MM F/4 GM OSS is the lightest lens in its class. The lens features two extreme dynamic (XD) linear motors that should allow for “fast, precise AF” and “reliable subject tracking.” The motors are operated by motion algorithms to try to minimize lag and instability. Plus, the lens is compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2.0x E-mount tele-converters, which should increase the focal length while keeping the AF moving fast. There are three different built-in optical stabilization mode settings as well.

Looking inside, the lens features an 11-blade circular aperture and should produce “high quality of bokeh.”

Design and durability

Designed for sporting events and wildlife photography, the FE 600mm F4 GM OSS is built with magnesium alloy and has a carbon fiber hood. The lens is dust and moisture resistant. Its front element is coated with fluorine to resist dirt and fingerprints.

Also, the lens features a number of hard controls on the lens. That includes customizable focus-hold buttons in four different locations on the lens barrel. Additionally, there’s a Full-Time DMF switch to immediately engage manual focus and a focus ring that features Linear Response MF.

The FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS offers a tele-zoom range from 200mm telephoto to 600mm super-telephoto. It’s compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters. They extend the reach to a maximum of 840mm at F9 or 1200mm at F13. And just like the 600MM F/4 GM OSS, the FE 200-600mm has built-in optical stabilization with three different mode settings.

The aperture is built with 11-blades and the lens is coated with Sony’s Nano AR coating.

According to Sony, the overall lens length does not change while zooming, “maintaining consistent balance and distance between the front of the lens and desired shooting subject.”

Durability and design

The lens’ focus ring features Linear Response MF and three customizable focus-hold buttons. There’s also a Focus Range Limiter.

As for its durability, the lens is dust and moisture resistant and has a fluorine coating on the front element to resist dirt and fingerprints.
