Sony has announced the future firmware updates it has scheduled for its Cinema Line cameras. These include the Sony Venice 2, Sony Burano, Sony FX6, Sony FX3 and Sony FX30. The firmware roadmap sets out firmware updates for up to the next three years. All of the updates will be free.
Venice 2 v4.0
The version 4.0 firmware for the Sony Venice 2 cinema camera is scheduled to be released in August 2025. It adds support for the EL Zone System developed by cinematographer Ed Lachman, ASC. This exposure tool uses a color overlay similar to false color. However, the colors directly represent stops of exposure rather than IRE values. With the version 4.0 firmware, you can also display frame lines in different colors. This is useful when you are shooting for more than one delivery aspect ratio. In addition, Sony has confirmed that there will be a Version 5.0 firmware update for the Venice 2 in 2026 followed by version 7.0 in 2027.
Burano v2.0
The version 2.0 firmware for the Sony Burano is coming in March 2025. It will bring new recording formats including a 3.8K full frame 16:9 mode up to 120 fps. You will also get new Super 35 options, including a 4.3K 4:3 mode for anamorphic up to 60 fps and a 1.9K 16:9 mode up to 240 fps. In addition, the camera gains a new 1.8x anamorphic desqueeze settings, and a range of high-speed frame rates from 66 fps to 110 fps. Other new features include exposure tools from the Venice system along with Active image stabilization in full-frame 6K and Super 35 mm 1.9K 16:9 modes. Version 2.0 adds focus breathing compensation as well.
FX6 v6.0
The version 6.0 firmware update for the Sony FX6 isn’t coming until February 2026. However, when it arrives, you will get a new BIG 6 menu as found on the Venice 2 and Burano. Another benefit of the update is that camera data won’t be overlaid on the image in the viewfinder. This means you will be able to see the full image and any necessary data more clearly. In addition, the v6.0 update should deliver the option to record externally in BRAW format to a Blackmagic Design Video Assist monitor recorder.
FX3 and FX30
In September 2025, Sony is going to release firmware update 7.0 for the Sony FX3 and version 6.0 for the FX30. As for the FX6, the two smaller cameras will get a new BIG 6 menu based on the Venice 2 and Burano. Anamorphic shooters will also be pleased to see the addition of a new 1.5x desqueeze option. In addition, the FX3 and FX30 will also be able to record BRAW externally via HDMI to a Blackmagic Video Assist.
What we think
It’s good to see Sony announcing its plans to support and update its Cinema Line cameras so far into the future. The roadmap also suggests that Sony isn’t planning to replace any of these camera models in the next year or two. This will be reassuring to anyone unsure as to whether to buy a new camera or wait for the next version. However, it is notable that the FX9 was excluded from these scheduled firmware updates. One slightly frustrating aspect of Sony’s announcement is the timescales involved. There are always technological challenges to overcome with any new features. However, Sony clearly wants to impose a predetermined schedule, the company isn’t just releasing updates as soon as they’re ready. Despite the wait, Sony Cinema Line shooters have a lot to look forward to.
