Sony has launched a new professional multi-purpose camera, the HDC-P50A. The camera features a 2/3-inch, 3-chip 4K image sensor with a global shutter and supports IP transmission using SMPTE ST 2110.
Design
The Sony HDC-P50A is intended for sports as well as other live performances and events. The camera has a compact and lightweight design, making it suitable for shooting in hard-to-reach or space-limited situations. It’s also ideal for remote use on jibs, cranes, wire support systems, and helicopter camera mounts. In addition, the HDC-P50A can be used handheld or in combination with a camera stabilizer.
Image sensor
The Sony HDC-P50A features a 3-chip, 2/3-inch 4K CMOS sensor with a global shutter, which eliminates the image distortions that can occur with the more common rolling shutter sensors. The high-performance sensor is combined with a specially developed Digital Signal Processing Circuit. Sony says this achieves very high sensitivity and extremely low noise levels, making the camera suitable for a wide range of shooting scenarios. In addition, the HDC-P50A supports the ITU-R BT.2020 color gamut, enabling exceptionally wide and precise color reproduction in live broadcasts.
SMPTE ST 2110
The Sony HDC-P50A supports IP transmission using SMPTE ST 2110 without the need for additional hardware. SMPTE ST 2110 is a set of standards for the transmission of video, audio, and associated data over IP networks. It is increasingly being adopted in the broadcasting and live production industries. However, an optional license is required to use SMPTE ST 2110. The HDC-P50A also supports IP Tally, making it an ideal choice for IP-based studios. In addition to IP transmission, the HDC-P50A supports regular SDI connections.
HDR and HFR
The Sony HDC-P50A supports high dynamic range (HDR) and high frame rate (HFR) video. When using the HDCU-5000 control unit, the camera can shoot slow-motion at up to 4x speed in 4K and 8x in HD. The camera also maintains standard-speed output in both SDR (standard dynamic range) and HDR operations. In addition, the HDC-P50A can be equipped with Sony’s optional HKC-VND50 variable ND filter unit.
Easy integration
The Sony HDC-P50A uses the same 4K image sensor and prism as the current HDC-3500 and HDC-5500 cameras, making it easy to integrate into existing systems. The camera is compatible with Sony’s HDCU-5000 and HDCU-5500 control units, as well as the IP camera extension adapter HDCE-TX50. Using these optional add-ons, you can send video over long-distance connections of up to 10 km using single-mode fiber.
What we think
The Sony HDC-P50A is a versatile camera that meets a wide range of video production needs. Its lightweight and compact design makes it ideal for handheld use. With the optional camera control unit, it’s also suited for remote operation. In addition, support for SMPTE ST 2110 means the HDC-P50A integrates easily into existing IP transmission setups. The Sony HDC-P50A is sure to be popular with professionals shooting sports, concerts, and other live events.
Pricing and availability
The HDC-P50A will be demonstrated on the Sony booth at IBC 2024 in Amsterdam this month. The company hasn’t announced a price or release date at the time of writing.
