Due to production reasons, Sony Japan is indefinitely delaying the 35mm f/1.4 GM. Set to launch on January 12th, the lens’ delay undoubtedly is a disappointment. Many were excited to get their hands on the lens.
Sony Japan posted on its website, detailing the delay. In the post, Sony says though it initially planned to ship the 35mm f/1.4 GM on February 12, 2021, it needs to delay the release. Sony cites production problems as the primary reason for the delay.
“Regarding the above, the release date was set to “February 12, 2021 (Friday)” at the time of the press announcement on January 14, 2021 (Thursday). Lens for digital single-lens camera α [E mount] FE 35mm F1. Regarding 4 GM “SEL35F14GM”, we have decided to postpone the release due to production reasons. Also, the release of the lens hood “ALC-SH164” will be postponed accordingly. We will inform you about the release date as soon as it is confirmed,” Sony writes. “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to customers who are looking forward to the information just before the release,” Sony wrote.
When will Sony release the 35mm f/1.4 GM?
The Sony post contains no timeline for when the lens will release. Adorama shows the 35mm f/1.4 GM with a February 22nd shipping date. We expect this isn’t accurate anymore.
PetaPixel connected the 35mm f/1.4 GM to the a6100 and RX0 back last December. Sony stated that it was experiencing a shortage in supplies, resulting in the delays. PetaPixel believes the supply shortage affected the 35mm f/1.4 GM’s release as well.
The supply shortage is likely due to a fire that destroyed the AKM factory in Japan. Additionally, the ongoing pandemic continues to force companies to delay releases. Still, we have no information about when the lens will release at this time.
We will update you once we learn more.
