Sony announces two new 4K live production monitors: BVM-HX1710 and BVM-HX1710N

Sony has announced two new 16.5-inch 4K TRIMASTER HX professional shading monitors to its range. The Sony BVM-HX1710 and Sony BVM-HX1710N have the same feature set, but the latter model supports SMPTE 2110 IP support.

Professional shading monitors

Sony’s new BVM-HX1710 and BVM-HX1710N are designed for use as camera shading monitors in outside broadcast (OB) vans and studio control rooms. Camera shading is the process of making different cameras match when using a multi-camera setup. The new 16.5-inch monitors are also the first in Sony’s lineup to offer 4K (3,840×2,160) resolution. Sony says that the new monitors set “a new standard for true-to-life color accuracy and brightness.”

The BVM-HX1710 and BVM-HX1710N are 4K high dynamic range (HDR) monitors. Both monitors also feature true black reproduction and a peak luminance of 3,000 nits. The screens utilize Sony’s latest dual-cell technology, adopted from the company’s flagship BVM-HX3110 critical grading monitor. In addition, the BVM-HX1710 and BVM-HX1710N have a wider viewing angle of 89 degrees in all directions. The monitors are even designed to make it easy to wipe off accidental fingerprints from transportation or installation.

TRIMASTER HX

Sony’s TRIMASTER HX technology is designed to deliver the highest levels of color accuracy, precision imaging, and picture quality consistency. The BVM-HX1710 and BVM-HX1710N also feature a Sony-designed dual-layer anti-reflection LCD panel with proprietary signal processing. This supports the monitors’ higher peak luminance, faster pixel response and wider viewing angles. In addition, advanced AR processing reduces reflections by canceling out incoming ambient light through optical wave cancellation similar to noise-canceling audio technology.

Inputs and outputs

The BVM-HX1710 and BVM-HX1710N both feature two 12G-SDI inputs and two 3G-SDI BNC inputs. There’s also a single HDCP2.3/1.4 HDMI input. The BVM-HX1710N model has two SFP28 IP LAN connections. In addition, both monitors have serial and parallel remote connections and a USB-C port. For outputs, the BVM-HX1710 and BVM-HX1710N have one 12G-SDI BNC enhanced monitor output as well as two 12G-SDI and two 3G-SDI BNC outputs.

Display tools

You can load and apply 3D LUTs (lookup tables) to the displays of both monitors. The BVM-HX1710 and BVM-HX1710N also offer a quad-view display so you can compare up to four sets of custom display settings. In addition, the monitors feature waveform monitor and vectorscope displays with scales for HDR or SDR. The waveform monitor options include luma, RGB parade, YCBCR parade, RGB overlay and HDR/SDR scale.

What we think

Sony’s new BVM-HX1710 and BVM-HX1710N monitors build on the technology developed for the company’s BVM-HX3110 color grading monitor. This means that you will get precise and accurate colors with high brightness and deep blacks. The new monitors will also integrate easily into the Sony professional monitor ecosystem monitors feature and deliver a similar user experience.

Pricing and availability

The new Sony 16.5-inch 4K TRIMASTER HX BVM-HX1710 and BVM-HX1710N professional shading monitors are scheduled to be available in summer 2025. Sony hasn’t announced pricing at the time of writing. A prototype of the BVM-HX1710N monitor will be on display in Sony’s booth at International IBC2024 this weekend.
