SmallRig’s new X-E5 baseplate adds wood-grain warmth to Fujifilm’s retro shooter

SmallRig has launched a new L-shaped mount plate for the Fujifilm X-E5 mirrorless digital camera. The baseplate also features an ergonomic solid wooden handgrip in a choice of ebony or rosewood.

Fujifilm X-E5

Launched last year, the Fujifilm X-E5 has a stylish design with analogue control dials on its machined aluminum top plate. It features a 40.2 MP APS-C sensor and is powered by Fujifilm’s X-Processor 5. The X-E5 also offers five-axis IBIS mechanism which delivers up to 7.0 stops of stabilization. Despite its still photography heritage, the X-E5 can record 6.2K 16:9 aspect ratio video up to 29.97 frames per second (fps).

The camera supports 16:9 and 17:9 DCI video in both 4K and HD formats up to 59.97 fps. In HD you can record up to 240 fps for super slow-motion playback as well.

Wooden handgrip

SmallRig’s new baseplate for the Fujifilm X-E5 features an ergonomic grip crafted from either solid rosewood or solid ebony. SmallRig says that the contoured handle provides a warm, smooth feel and reduces hand fatigue during extended shoots. The added comfort of the grip should also help to improve the stability of the camera in your hand. In addition, you get a wooden shutter button cap and wooden hot shoe cover to match the handle. SmallRig advises that as the design uses natural solid wood, variations in wood grain between individual units are normal.

Metal baseplate

As well as the two wood color options, you can also choose between matte black or polished silver metal for the baseplate. These colors are designed to match the two metal colorways that the Fujifilm X-E5 offers.  The mount plate also incorporates an Arca-Swiss quick release plate and a 1/4″-20 threaded hole at the base.

Additionally, SmallRig has ensured that the baseplate gives you unobstructed access to the battery compartment, memory card slot, and all camera controls. At only 1.8 ounces (51g) the mount plate and handle won’t add much weight to your camera either.

What we think

SmallRig’s new mount plate with wooden handle for the Fujifilm X-E5 is a stylish accessory that matches the inherent stylishness of the camera. As well as adding a classic look, the ergonomic wooden handle should feel warmer and more comfortable on longer shoots. The built-in Swiss-Arca quick release plate also makes it simple and fast to switch from handheld to a tripod shooting.

In addition, the wooden shutter release button and hot shoe coves are thoughtful design elements to compliment the look of the handle. If you shoot with a Fujifilm X-E5, the new SmallRig wooden handle mount plate is a great add-on.
