The Sigma 23mm DC DN | Contemporary prime lens has a field of view equivalent to a focal length of 35mm in full frame format. The large maximum aperture of F1.4 will be great for shooting in low light. You will also be able to create a shallow depth of field which isn’t easy with a wider focal length. In addition, with nine aperture blades, the 23 mm lens should deliver a smooth, round bokeh in out of focus parts of your image.

Optical construction

In terms of construction, the 23mm prime lens is composed of 13 elements in 10 groups. These include three special low dispersion glass elements and two aspherical lenses. The 23 mm lens also uses a quiet, high-speed stepping motor for fast and accurate autofocus. In addition, the lens has a compact and lightweight design. It measures only 3.11 inches (79.2 mm) in length and weighs only 11.8 ounces (335 g).

The Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS | Contemporary zoom lens covers an angle of view equivalent to 150-600 mm in full frame format. Despite this long telephoto range, the lens is relatively compact, measuring 7.9 inches (199.5 mm) in length and weighing 40 ounces (1,135 g). However, the 100-400 mm lens is built to last, with magnesium alloy used for the part where the tripod socket is attached.

Optical construction

The 100-400mm zoom lens is constructed with 22 elements in 16 groups. These include one ultra-low-dispersion element and four special low dispersion glass elements. The lens also features built-in five step optical stabilization to help keep your video shake free. When combined with a camera body with image stabilization built in, the lens corrects for pitch and yaw axis rotations, providing even more stable footage. In addition, the OS has a dedicated mode for times when you want to pan the camera while filming.

What we think

These two new lenses from Sigma are a great addition to the company’s Fujifilm X-mount range. Both models are already available with Leica L and Sony E-mount options. The 23 mm prime lens is a good general purpose focal length with the bonus of a super wide maximum aperture. It’s also lightweight and would work well with a camera on a gimbal. The 100-400 mm zoom lens is a little more specialist but is ideal for sports or wildlife videography with its long telephoto reach. Although you will get the best results shooting from a tripod, the optical stabilization is a useful feature for when you need to go handheld.

Pricing and availability

Sigma says that both lenses will be available from September 23. 2023. The 23mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary prime lens is set to retail at $549. The 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS | Contemporary zoom lens will cost $949.
