Sigma announces new 12 mm and 200 mm prime lenses

Sigma has announced two new and very different prime lenses. The Sigma 12mm F1.4 DC | Contemporary is a wide-angle lens for cameras with an APS-C-sized sensor. As for the Sigma 200mm F2 DG OS | Sports, it’s a telephoto lens for full-frame cameras.

12 mm Contemporary

Sigma says that the 12mm DC | Contemporary has the widest angle of view for an APS-C lens with an F1.4 aperture on the market. The company also says that the lens is designed for comfortable shooting of both stills and video. A 12 mm focal length on an APS-C sensor will have the same angle of view as an 18 mm lens on a full-frame sensor. In addition, the lens is available with Sony E-mount, Fujifilm X-mount, or a Canon RF-mount. With the E- and X-mount options, you get a manual aperture ring. However, the RF-mount swaps this for a control ring.

Optical design

The Sigma 12mm DC | Contemporary prime lens is constructed with 14 lens elements in 12 groups. These include two SLD (Special Low Dispersion glass) elements and three aspherical elements. The wide F1.4 aperture also features 9 iris blades to give a smooth, rounded bokeh in the out-of-focus parts of your image. The 12 mm lens has a useful close-focus distance of only 6.8 inches (17.2 cm). The lens is very compact at only 2.7 inches (68.5 mm) in length and weighs just 7.9 ounces (225 g). It has a filter size of 62 mm.

200 mm Sports

Sigma says that the 200mm DG OS | Sports is the world’s first 200 mm telephoto prime lens with an aperture of F2 designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. It also features a linear motor HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) for fast and accurate autofocus performance. The close focus distance is 67 inches (170 cm). Usefully, the 200 mm lens offers optical image stabilization, which delivers up to 6.5 stops of stabilization. You can choose between L-mount and Sony E-mount options.

Build

The Sigma 200mm DG OS | Sports lens is a big lens, measuring 7.9 inches (201 mm) in length and weighing 64.2 ounces (1.82kg). It also has a large 105 mm filter thread. The 200 mm lens is constructed with 19 lens elements in fourteen groups. These include two FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) elements and two SLD lens elements. With an 11-bladed iris, the F2 aperture will again deliver smooth, rounded bokeh. Also, the 200 mm lens features a dust- and splash-resistant design so you can be confident when shooting in challenging conditions.

What we think

Sigma’s new 12 mm prime lens is ideal for APS-C camera users seeking wide-angle shots. The super-wide F1.4 maximum aperture will deliver great low-light performance. You will also be able to get images with a shallow depth of field, which is usually more of a challenge with such a wide focal length lens. The wide F2 aperture on Sigma’s 200 mm telephoto prime lens is great for low-light work as well. However, the depth of field is going to be razor-thin wide open. Hopefully, the autofocus can keep up.

And, the onboard image stabilization is going to help keep your videos stable when shooting handheld. Sigma’s new 12 mm and 200 mm lenses would be excellent additions to any video maker’s kit bag.

Availability

The Sigma 200mm F2 DG OS | Sports telephoto prime lens will retail at $3,299. It comes with a lens hood, tripod mount, and a shoulder strap.

The Sigma 12mm F1.4 DC | Contemporary wide-angle prime lens costs $629.

Both lenses are scheduled to go on sale on September 4, 2025.
