Samsung has announced the addition of three new OLED models to its Odyssey gaming monitor range. The new monitors will be debuted at the CES 2024 tech show in Las Vegas next week.
Odyssey OLED G9
The Odyssey OLED G9 is a 49-inch curved ultra-wide gaming monitor. The screen has a DQHD resolution of 5120 by 1440 pixels which gives a 32:9 aspect ratio, twice as wide as 16:9. The G9 monitor also has a refresh rate of 240Hz and 0.03ms GTG response time. The GTG (gray-to-gray) response time is how long it takes a pixel to change from one shade of gray to another.
OLED G8 and G6
The Odyssey OLED G8 is Samsung’s first flat 32-inch gaming monitor with a 4K UHD resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels. This gives the screen a 16:9 aspect ratio. The G8 also has the same refresh rate of 240Hz and 0.03ms GTG response time as the G9. With a 27-inch QHD 2560 by 1440 resolution 16:9 screen, the Odyssey OLED G6 is the smallest of the new gaming monitors. However, it has a faster 360Hz refresh rate in addition to the 0.03ms GTG response time.
Glare-Free
All three new Odyssey gaming monitors feature Samsung’s Glare-Free technology. This minimizes light reflections so that you get consistent brightness and color in nearly any lighting environment. The new monitors are also rated as VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 which delivers detailed images with vivid colors. In addition, the G9, G8, and G6 all support AMD FreeSync Premium Pro for ultra-smooth, low-latency HDR gaming.
Other features
All three new monitors offer a comprehensive range of connections with two HDMI 2.1 ports, a USB hub, and a DisplayPort 1.4 input. You can also mount the screens on their height-adjustable stands which feature tilt, swivel, and pivot control points. Alternatively, the monitors are compatible with standard VESA mounts. In addition, the Odyssey OLED G8 and G9 models include new Core Lighting+. The feature emits ambient light from the back of the monitor for a more immersive experience.
Multi Control
The Odyssey OLED G9 and G8 gaming monitors offer Multi Control. With this new feature, you can transfer images and text between the monitor and other Samsung devices such as a Galaxy Book, tablet, or smartphone. The G9 and G9 monitors also include the Samsung SmartThings Hub. This means you can connect to IoT (Internet of Things) devices that are compatible with Matter and the Home Connectivity Alliance. In addition, the Samsung Smart TV platform and Gaming Hub in the G9 and G8 give you access to streaming and cloud gaming services.
What we think
The new Odyssey OLED monitors from Samsung have great screens and a good selection of features. Although they are aimed at gamers, the OLED screens should be ideal for video editing. It’s also good to see that companies are starting to introduce OLED monitors with smaller screen sizes. Hopefully, Samsung will be able to keep the prices of the new Odyssey OLED monitors as low as possible to make them affordable for a wide range of consumers.
Availability
Samsung hasn’t released details of pricing or launch dates for its new Odyssey OLED gaming monitors at the time of writing.
