Sachtler launches next-generation Ace Mk II fluid head systems

Sachtler has launched the latest generation of its popular Ace fluid head systems. The new Sachtler Ace M Mk II and Sachtler Ace XL Mk II feature smooth Sachtler drag and multi-step counterbalance.

Ace M Mk II

Sachtler says that the Ace M Mk II system offers broadcast-quality camera support in a lightweight and simple system. It’s a relatively lightweight head at only 3.7 pounds (1.7 kg). However, it can still support a payload of up to 8.8 pounds (4 kg). The Ace M Mk II also features five steps of fast counterbalance and Sachtler drag with 3 + 0 steps. In addition, the balance plate has a 4.1 inch (104 mm) sliding range. This ensures that you can position accessorized cameras centrally on the head. The Ace M Mk II has a 75 mm bowl.

Ace XL Mk II

The Ace XL Mk II fluid head is designed for heavier digital cine-style cameras. As such, it supports payloads up to 17.6 pounds (8 kg), yet still only weighs the same as the M model. As with the M, the Ace XL Mk II has Sachtler drag with 3 + 0 steps and a 4.1 inch balance plate sliding range. However, the XL features 9 steps of counterbalance to quickly balance larger cameras and rigs. It also includes an illuminated level bubble to keep things straight in any location. In addition, the Ace XL Mk II 75 mm bowl has an integrated flat base plus a removable threaded stud so you can easily swap from a tripod to a slider.

Tripod systems

The Ace XL Mk II fluid head is available on its own or in a range of tripod systems, including options with flowtech75, the world’s fastest tripod. In addition, to enhance functionality, all 75-millimeter tripods sold with Ace Mk II now feature three three-eighth-inch mounting points on the tripod bowl. These mounting points allow for the attachment of accessories like a Magic Arm, lights or the new Ace Carry Handle. Unlike the XL model, the Ace M Mk II fluid head is only available as part of a tripod system and is not sold separately. Ace M Mk II systems include an aluminum tripod with a carry handle and a choice of spreader.

What we think

The new Sachtler Ace M Mk II and Ace XL Mk II fluid head systems are among the lightest-weight tripod systems on the market. However, they still offer great support for medium and larger broadcast and cinema cameras. They also deliver the key features you need from a professional fluid head and tripod system. Sachtler is one of the industry standard brands, so you can be assured of a quality product. If are looking for a new fluid head or tripod system, you should have a look at the new Ace M Mk II and Ace XL Mk II.
