Reeflex has updated its Pro Camera app for iPhone to version 3. The latest version adds exposure bracketing, focus stacking, burst mode and a new interface for the app.
Redesigned interface
For version 3, Reeflex has redesigned the user interface of Pro Camera and improved the shooting experience. To help with your exposure, the histogram has been updated so you can switch between displaying luminance or RGB with a single tap. You can also swipe down from the top of the screen to access controls for the camera’s flash, self, timer and framing guides. There’s a focus loupe feature which you can position to ensure your subject is sharp when focussing manually. In addition, the new interface makes it simpler to select your format and resolution. Pro Camera V3 gives you full support of virtual lenses on your iPhone as well.
Exposure bracketing
Version 3 adds exposure bracketing to the Pro Camera app. When you press the shutter button, the camera takes three images. As well as your main image, it captures one at a higher exposure setting and one at a lower exposure setting. You can independently choose between half a stop to four stops for each of the under and over exposed images. In post-production, you can then combine these three shots to create a single high dynamic range (HDR) image. Currently you will need to use third-party software to merge the images, but Reeflex is hoping to add this feature to Pro Camera with a future update.
Focus stacking
Focus stacking in Pro Camera V3 works in a similar way to exposure bracketing, but for focus. Using the feature, you need to set the near and far focus distances. You can then choose how many images you want the app to capture. When you click the shutter button, Pro Camera V3 pulls focus between your chosen points while taking multiple images. You can combine the multiple images to create a single image with a deep depth of field. It’s ideal for macro photography work. As with exposure bracketing, Reeflex is going to add the ability to merge images to Pro Camera in the future but for now you will need to use third party software.
Burst mode
Pro Camera V3 is much faster and more responsive when you are taking a photo. There is now almost no shutter lag thanks to the optimizations that Reeflex has implemented. This makes taking a photo much more natural and intuitive. Pro Camera V3 also offers a new high speed burst capture mode. You simply need to press and hold the shutter button. Usefully the app displays a real time count of the number of images captured. Additionally, the Burst On Tap feature means you can capture from 2 up to 20 photos with a single tap of the shutter button.
What we think
With the update to version 3, Reeflex has delivered some impressive improvements to its Pro Camera app. Exposure bracketing and focus stacking are great tools to deliver images that you couldn’t otherwise capture with your iPhone. You will need to use a tripod or similar mount to keep your smartphone still for best results, however.
The burst mode options mean you can take multiple images to ensure you get the best shot possible with action scenes. The new interface and overall improved performance with Pro Camera V3 also make using the app much more natural and fun. The only downside is that Pro Camera is iOS only, so Android users are out of luck. There’s no option to shoot video either, Pro Camera V3 only shoots still images.
Pricing and availability
Reeflex Pro Camera V3 is available on the Apple app store now. You can get a yearly subscription for $15 USD, or you can purchase lifetime access for $26. The app offers a free trial, so you can see if you like it before committing to buy.
