Plugable unveils fast, budget 512GB drive

Plugable has announced a new 512GB drive. This is a 512GB model of the company’s Plugable Thunderbolt 3 NVMe External SSD.

The Plugable Thunderbolt 3 NVMe External SSD is described as “a powerful solid state drive that offers budget-conscious creators a generous amount of storage without breaking the bank.” Additionally, Plugable says the SSD “reduces” bottlenecks and “improves” performance with “rapid” speeds. So how fast is the SSD? It reaches speeds of up to 2400 MB/sec read and 1800 MB/sec write. Also, there’s no need for an external power connection.

A 512GB drive for creators

Plugable states the “Plugable SSD is perfect for creators and editors.” For those that need fast storage and often works with large, hi-res files, the Plugable SSD should be a good choice, according to Plugable. Additionally, Plugable 512GB drive is capable of storing 85 minutes of ProRes 422 HQ 4K video or 75 minutes of DnXHR HQ 4K video.

With Thunderbolt 3 and NVMe storage, the Plugable SSD could pass many traditional SATA III SSDs and interfaces directly with CPUs through PCI Express. That should result in “rapid performance, lower latency and reduced CPU usage,” according to Plugable. “With up to 4x faster transfer speeds than SATA, the Plugable SSD is designed to maximize the throughput for the SSD making editing quick and easy,” says Plugable.

Compatibility and design

The 512GB drive is compatible and interchangeable with any Thunderbolt 3-enabled Mac or Windows.

As for the design, the SSD weighs 6.1oz and is slightly larger than a smartphone. Also, it’s built with Anodized aluminum.

  • Aluminum design
  • Thunderbolt 3 interface with integrated 18cm/7″ 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 cable
  • 512GB NVMe Solid State storage with PCIe Gen3 x4 link
  • Transfer speeds of 2400+ MB/s read and 1800+ MB/s write
