Panasonic shrinks a 15x zoom camera down to pocket size

Panasonic has launched a new pocket-sized digital compact camera with an impressive 15x optical zoom. The Panasonic LUMIX DC-ZS300 also offers 20MP still images and 4K video recording. Outside the U.S., the camera will be sold with the model number TZ300.

Compact design

This new LUMIX camera is a compact camera with a similarly compact body, measuring just 4.38 inches (111.25 mm) by 2.61 inches (66.29 mm) by 1.78 inches (45.21 mm). It’s also lightweight at only 0.6 pounds (295g). Inside the camera features a 1.0-type BSI (backside illuminated) CMOS sensor. Panasonic says that this delivers bright, detailed images with minimal noise, even in low-light scenes. In addition, the ZS300 has a fixed 3-inch touchscreen LCD on the back. However, it doesn’t have a viewfinder.

Optical zoom

The LUMIX ZS300 has a Leica-certified 8.8-132 mm 5x optical zoom. This is equivalent to a focal length range of 24-360 mm on a full frame 35 mm camera. It also designed with 13 lens elements in 11 groups. The maximum aperture is f/3.3 at 8.8 mm and f/6.4 at 132 mm.

Additionally, the ZS300 offers 5-axis HYBRID optical image stabilization for smooth and stable video while walking. The close focus distance is 19.7 inches (50 cm) at 8.8 mm and 39.4 inches (100 cm) at 132 mm. There is a macro mode which focuses down to 1.2 inches (3 cm) as well.

Video recording

The LUMIX ZS300 can record 4K UHD (3840×2160 pixels) at up to 30 frame per second (fps). However, there is a 15-minute recording limit when shooting 4K. You can also record Full HD at up to 60 fps, and 1280×720 video at 30 fps. Files are saved in an 8-bit MP4 format. Plu, the ZS300 has a 4K Photo burst mode that captures images at 30 fps, and you can extract stills to save the perfect moment. The ZS300 can record 2-channel stereo audio via its built-in microphone.

Other features

The LUMIX ZS300 features 22 creative filters which deliver a wide range of in-camera effects to stylize your images. It has a single SD card slot to save your files and comes with a 7.2 V 1025 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Panasonic says this should last for around 360 shots, and you can also recharge the camera via its USB-C port.

And, the ZS300 features Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity so you can remotely control the camera and wirelessly transfer your files. You can choose between black and gray body colors.

What we think

The Panasonic LUMIX ZS300 delivers high quality photos and video in a truly pocket-sized package. As a result, you can carry it with you everywhere without feeling a burden. It’s a fun camera that’s also ideal for sports events or music concerts with its 15x optical zoom. Although 4K video is limited to 15 minutes, you can shoot for longer in Full HD. With the optical image stabilization, you will get great results with your videos as well, even when walking. The ZS300 isn’t cheap but if it’s a luxury you can afford, it could replace your smartphone as your take-anywhere camera.

Pricing and availability

The Panasonic LUMIX ZS300 is available for preorder at $899.
