NVIDIA acquires SchedMD and releases new open AI models

NVIDIA has announced that it has acquired SchedMD, the developer of Slurm. Slurm is an open-source workload management system. NVIDIA has also announced the release of a new family of open AI models called Nemotron 3.

Who is SchedMD?

SchedMD is a U.S. software company and the main developer of the Slurm Wokload Manager, also just known as Slurm. Slurm stands for Simple Linux Utility for Resource Management. It’s a free, open-source workload management system for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI. HPC and AI workloads involve complex computations running parallel tasks that require queuing, scheduling and allocating computational resources. As a result, Slurm is part of the critical infrastructure needed for generative AI.

Ongoing development

Prior to the acquisition, NVIDIA has collaborated with SchedMD for over a decade. NVIDIA says it will carry on investing in Slurm’s development so that the software remains the leading open-source scheduler for HPC and AI.

In addition, NVIDIA is going to continue to offer open-source software support, training and development for Slurm to SchedMD’s customers.

“We’re thrilled to join forces with NVIDIA, as this acquisition is the ultimate validation of Slurm’s critical role in the world’s most demanding HPC and AI environments,” said Danny Auble, CEO of SchedMD. “NVIDIA’s deep expertise and investment in accelerated computing will enhance the development of Slurm — which will continue to be open source — to meet the demands of the next generation of AI and supercomputing.”

Nemotron 3

NVIDIA also announced the Nemotron 3 family of three new open AI models. Nemotron 3 Nano is optimized for tasks such as software debugging, content summarization and AI assistant workflows. Alternatively, Nemotron 3 Super is designed for applications that require many collaborating agents to achieve complex tasks with low latency. The most powerful model, Nemotron 3 Ultra is also an advanced reasoning engine for AI workflows that demand deep research and strategic planning.

“Open innovation is the foundation of AI progress,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “With Nemotron, we’re transforming advanced AI into an open platform that gives developers the transparency and efficiency they need to build agentic systems at scale.”

What we think

With the acquisition of SchedMD, NVIDIA is taking steps to ensure it remains at the heart of AI development. Anyone who has tried to buy a new GPU over the past few years will also be all too aware of how important NVIDIA’s hardware is for AI systems. Now NVIDIA can ensure that the development of new chips and hardware is in sync with the need of the Slurm software. Additionally, the Nemotron 3 AI models will further enhance NVIDIA’s presence in the open source AI world.

Pricing and availability

Nemotron 3 Nano is available now on Hugging Face open-source platform and community for Machine Learning and AI. Nemotron 3 Super and Ultra are scheduled to launch in the first half of 2026.
