Nikon releases update for NX Tether

Nikon has released an update for its NX Tether software app. NX Tether allows you to connect your Nikon camera to your computer for tethered photography. Version 2.3.0 of the program expands the list of supported cameras and adds new live view features.

NX Tether

As the name suggest, with NX Tether you can connect your compatible Nikon camera to your computer. You can tether your camera via a USB cable, or wirelessly if your camera has a built-in wireless transmitter or supports an optional wireless transmitter. Once connected, you can control every aspect of your camera remotely via your computer. The intuitive interface is designed to feel instantly familiar to Nikon camera users. NX Tether also supports stills and video shooting with full remote live view support. In addition, the program quickly imports high resolution .NEF RAW, JPEG and video files to your computer.

Version 2.3.0

The Version 2.3.0 update for NX Tether adds support for additional cameras and several new features when using the software. The full list of improvements is:

  • NX Tether now supports the Nikon Z5II.
  • The framing guide display is now available in the live view window of NX Tether.
  • You can now use Live View in NX Tether with the Nikon Zf.
  • Shutter speed is now displayed as “- -” in NX Tether when the shutter mode is set to shutter angle.
  • You can now save and load the power zoom positions when using the Nikon Z9, Z8 and Zf.
  • The Nikon Z8 and Zf now support pixel shift photography. Pixel shift allows you to take multiple pictures while shifting the camera’s image sensor by a single pixel or less. The feature then merges these pictures to generate a higher-resolution image.
  • The Nikon Zf now supports slow-motion video recording, and the “Birds” detection feature when using autofocus.

What we think

NX Tether is a great program for remotely controlling your Nikon camera. It’s ideal for mounting situations where it’s difficult to access the on-camera controls. However, you still maintain full control over your camera including shutter speed, white balance and focus. You also gain the advantage of using the much larger screen on your computer when composing your shots or setting focus.

Additionally, ZX Tether integrates easily with other software including Nikon NX Studio, Capture One and Adobe Lightroom. If you use a supported Nikon camera, you should download NX Tether to see how it can help with your workflow.

Availability

Version 2.3.0 of NX Tether is available to download free of charge from the Nikon website.
