At the recent IBC 2024 show, SmallRig announced its latest video light. The SmallRig RC 100B COB LED bi-color light is available in both a standard version and a mobile version.
Standard or Mobile
The SmallRig RC 100B COB LED video light comes in two configurations: standard or mobile. The lamp head is the same in both versions but the mounting options change. With the standard unit, the base of the light is a traditional light stand adaptor. However, the mobile version of the RC100B replaces that with a grip handle designed for handheld use.
Compact design
The RC 100B COB LED video light has a compact cube-shaped design. It measures only 4.5 inches (115 mm) by 3.7 inches (95 mm) by 3.7 inches (95 mm) and weighs under 25 ounces (700 g). You also get control knobs for CCT and intensity as well as a small display screen. In addition, the back of the lamp head has a built-in V-mount plate for power. With the mobile version, you also get a battery adaptor plate for use with NP-F 970 batteries.
Bi-color
The RC 100B COB LED video light is a bi-color light with a CCT range from 2700K to 6500K. Color accuracy is also very high with a CRI of 97+ and TLCI of 98+. Despite its small size, SmallRig says that the RC 100B is 20% brighter compared to standard 100 W fill lights. At 1 meter, the light can output 4610 lux when set to 5600K. If you add the 45-degree mini reflector, that jumps up to 20100 lux.
Power options
You can power the RC 100B COB LED video light with a V-mount battery via the built-in V-mount plate. Alternatively, with the mobile version, you can use two NP-F970 batteries although this does restrict the light to 60% of its maximum power. The light also has a USB-C port with up to 110W input so you can use PD 100W power banks or PD 140W chargers. SmallRig does make a mains power adaptor, but this is an optional extra. Out of the box, you can only use battery power.
Other features
As well as the onboard controls, you can operate the RC 100B COB LED video light remotely via the SmallGoGo app. The light also offers wired remote control via DMX. There is a cooling fan in the RC 100B but SmallRig says that this only emits 26 dB of noise even at full power so it shouldn’t be an issue in most scenarios. In addition, the light features a standard Bowens mount so you can use a wide range of modifiers from SmallRig and third parties. The RC 100B has nine built-in lighting effects including paparazzi, television, faulty bulb, lightning, and flame.
Power Handle
SmallRig has designed an optional Power Handle for the RC 100B COB LED video light. This replaces the light stand or handheld handle on the light. The Power Handle has a built-in V-mount plate on the base of its handle. With a battery connected, it looks a little like the handle of a power drill. The Power Handle supports up to 100W USB-C PD output and a maximum 10A D-Tap output. SmallRig says it will deliver around 45 minutes of full power output for RC 100B.
What we think
SmallRig’s new RC 100B COB LED bi-color video light is a handy fixture to have in your lighting arsenal. It’s small enough that it won’t add too much to your kit bag to carry around. However, it still packs enough output to be a useful fill source. You could also use the RC100B as a key light if you keep it close to your subject and just off-camera. In addition, the handheld options for the RC 100B make it particularly versatile for run-and-gun style shooting. If you need a small light or want good battery power options, the SmallRig RC 100B should be on your shortlist.
Pricing and availability
The standard version of the SmallRig RC 100B COB LED video light costs $230. This comes with a mini reflector, a light stand adapter, a silicone diffuser and a USB-C cable. Alternatively, the mobile version of the light retails at $200 and comes with a mini reflector, a grip handle and the NP-F 970 battery plate. The lights are available now and SmallRig says the Power Handle accessory is coming soon.
