Mavis has announced version 7 of its popular Camera app for iPhone and iPad. The latest version delivers camera-to-cloud via Adobe Frame.io and livestreaming to social media. You also get improved ergonomics, advanced audio management and improved monitoring tools.
Mavis Camera app
The Mavis Camera app was first launched for the iPhone 5. However, the latest iPhones are much more powerful, with high-resolution cameras and a bright OLED screen. Mavis has also continued to evolve the Camera app to keep pace with the technology. The company says that v7 of the app has “a beautifully designed iOS interface that feels natural to busy professionals.” It’s available natively on the iPad for the first time as well.
Redesigned interface
The user interface of the Mavis Camera app has been completely remodelled to reflect improvements in iPhone technology. You can now quickly assign controls to the iPhone’s function button. The interface also includes Mavis’s unique thumb rails. These are curved tracks that follow the natural motion of your thumb. They control exposure, focus and white balance. Also, you can configure the thumb rails for right or left-handed use.
Camera controls
The Mavis Camera app gives you far more control over your iPhone’s camera than the standard interface. You can choose the recording formats, frame rates, color balance and set the focus.
There are also a range of professional tools including focus peaking, false color, zebras, waveform and vector scope. However, you can still opt for the app’s full Auto mode for quick set-ups.
Audio
The Mavis Camera app includes comprehensive features for audio mixing and audio management. You can connect up to eight audio channels to your phone via a USB audio interface, or a microphone with a USB output. There are also accurate meters so that you can set the ideal audio levels.
In addition, both mixed audio and source stems can be recorded at the same time.
Frame.io
The Mavis Camera app is certified by Adobe and connects directly to Frame.io for fast production workflows. This means that your content starts uploading while the camera is still shooting. With a stable internet connection, the process is super quick. As a result, you can get edited and branded content uploaded within minutes of being filmed. Additionally, Mavis Camera is part of the Mavis cloud platform, so you can easily stream to Twitch, YouTube and Instagram.
What we think
The Mavis Camera app is a big improvement over the iPhone’s native camera tools. With v7, the app’s interface and functionality have been updated to take advantage of the features of the latest iPhone models. You also get the professional focus and exposure tools you would expect on a cinema camera. And, the inclusion of cloud-based workflows means that your video can be edited and shared as soon as it is shot.
For many users, the free version of the Mavis Camera app will be more than enough. However, you do need to pay if you want to use the Frame.io integration.
Pricing and availability
The Mavis Camera app v7 runs on iPhone and iPad devices that support iOS 18. It is available as a free download now. There is also the Pro Pack which includes direct connection to Frame.io, timecode support, and the advanced audio mixer. This is also available now for a one-off purchase of $15.
