Lexar has announced two new portable SSDs, the Lexar SL300 and Lexar ES3 external drives. The company says that the SL300 and ES3 external drives deliver the speed, efficiency and security you need from your data storage.
USB 3.2 Gen 2
The SL300 and ES3 SSDs both feature a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface. This should mean that you can expect read speeds up to 1050MB/s and write speeds of up to 1000MB/s. Lexar claims this also makes the new drives around 9.5 times faster than a traditional hard disk drive. In addition, the two SSDs come with a 2-in-1 USB-C/USB-A cable, making them plug-and-play with PCs, Macs, and even smartphones.
Durability
The SL300 and ES3 SSDs both feature built-in double-layer graphite sheets. This effectively conducts heat to help ensure that the drives stay cool even during the most intensive read and write tasks.
Both drives are also designed to be durable, claiming drop resistance up to 6.5 feet (2 meters). The SL300 offers additional protection for your data as it is IP-54 rated for water and dust resistance.
Lexar DataShield
The SL300 and ES3 SSDs both come with Lexar’s DataShield 256-bit AES encryption software to safeguard your important safeguard. You also get access to the Lexar Recovery Tool. This can help recover accidentally deleted data.

What we think
As all video makers know, you can never have too much storage. Shooting in 4K or higher soon fills your drives. The new SL300 and ES3 SSDs from Lexar offer good capacities at a reasonable price. They also support fast transfer which will save time when backing up files from your cameras. In addition, they may well prove fast enough to edit your footage from as long as your computer supports USB 3.2 Gen 2. The SL300 and ES3 have very similar specifications. However, the additional IP-54 rating of the SL300 makes it the safer option for taking out on location.
Pricing and availability
The Lexar SL300 SSD will be available from mid-December priced at $109 for 1 TB and $179 for 2 TB. The Lexar ES3 SSD is only available in a 2 TB capacity and also costs $179. It’s out now.
