Leica improves SL3 and Q3 autofocus with latest firmware updates

Leica has released new firmware updates for both its SL3 and Q3 series cameras. The headline improvements for both cameras is that auto focusing has been “significantly improved” according to the company. Both firmware updates are numbered as version 4.0.0.

Improved autofocus

The SL3 firmware update covers Leica’s SL3 and SL3-S cameras while the Q3 firmware update is for the Leica Q3 and Q3 43. Leica says that for all of the cameras automatic focusing on human features (eyes and faces) has been significantly improved through AI-assisted models.

The tracking algorithm automatically adjusts the size and shape of the focus field during subject tracking. Leica says that this results in more stable and reliable performance over extended periods of time.

AF menu improvements

Leica has revised the AF mode and simplified the menu structure for all SL3 and Q3 cameras. As part of this, Multi-Field and Spot have been combined into one menu. In addition, a new AF Acquisition menu is now available in both the FN list and the Control Center. Subject recognition has also been expanded as well. It now covers humans (eye/face/body) and animals, including birds, dogs, wolves, cats and big cats.

New video features

Leica has optimized the Looks menu for all SL3 and Q3 cameras and added a new Intensity setting option. For the SL3 and SL3-S, Leica has introduced additional video formats with lower bit rates. The cameras also now support the aspect ratios 4:3 (anamorphic) and 3:2. When using an anamorphic lens, the camera can now de-squeeze during playback with the desqueeze factors: 1.25, 1.3, 1.33, 1.5, 1.6, 1.65, 1.8, 1.85, 2.0.

Additionally, for the Q3 and Q3 43, the Video profiles have been integrated and the menu structure adapted to suit the new Leica user interface. You can now scroll through all video modes and select them directly.

What we think

Leica shooters will be delighted with the latest updates for the SL3 and Q3 series of cameras. Significant improvements in autofocusing on human features should mean that more of your images will be pin sharp. There are also improvements to subject tracking and recognition as well.

The new anamorphic options are a boost to the video features of the SL3 and SL3-S. If you use an SL3 or Q3 series camera you should update the firmware at the earliest opportunity.
