Kenko Tokina has announced that it is ending production of the Zeiss Loxia prime lens series. The company posted the news on its Japanese website earlier this month.
Zeiss Loxia
The first Zeiss Loxia lenses were launched in 2014, with other models added up to 2018. The lenses have a compact and robust metal design. There are currently four prime lenses in the Zeiss Loxia series: 25 mm f/2.4, 35 mm f/2, 50 mm f/2 and 85 mm f/2.4. All of the focal lengths cover a full-frame sensor. With a 180-degree focus ring, the Zeiss Loxia lenses are ideally suited for video work. In addition, you can choose to de-click the aperture rings on the lenses for smooth changes in exposure while filming. The Zeiss Loxia lenses are available for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras.
Kenko Tokina published a statement about the Zeiss Loxia lenses on its Japanese website. It said, “Kenko Tokina Co., Ltd. would like to inform you that production of the following products has been discontinued. Thank you for your patronage. We look forward to your continued support: Loxia 2.8/21, Loxia 2.4/25, Loxia 2/50, Loxia 2.4/85.”
What has Zeiss said?
The website PetaPixel said that it had spoken to Zeiss about the decision to end the Loxia lens series. The company told PetaPixel, “In response to the latest market developments, we have decided to adapt our product portfolio and therefore, will no longer offer the lens in question.” However, there are still other Zeiss lenses being made as the company has a continuing manufacturing partnership with Cosina.
What we think
The Zeiss name is an iconic brand in the world of lenses. However, the company has been using third-party manufacturers to produce its camera lenses for some time. As long as two years ago, there were rumors that Zeiss was ending its lens production. Now that has come true for the Loxia lens series at least. Zeiss hasn’t made any comments about the Otus lenses, which were announced in February this year. Hopefully, this isn’t the end for Zeiss camera lenses.
Priing and availability
Although the Zeiss Loxia lenses are no longer being manufactured, they are still shown as being in stock by some retailers. If you want to pick one up, you should act quickly.
