GoPro’s GP3 processor promises a new era for action cameras ahead of NAB 2026 debut

GoPro has released another teaser video giving glimpses of video from its new GP3-powered cameras. The company has announced the cameras will debut at NAB 2026 at the end of this month.

What is GP3?

GP3 is GoPro’s exclusive, next‑generation AI imaging processor. At the launch announcement in March 2026, the company described it as “our most powerful custom imaging processor to date”. GP3 is a 5-nanometer System-on-a-Chip (SoC) that delivers more than 2x the pixel processing power of the current GP2 processor. In addition, GP3 promises power efficiency and thermal performance which will significantly outperform the competition.

AI Neural Processor Unit

The GP3 image processor includes a specialized AI Neural Processor Unit (NPU). GoPro says this “enables next-generation video pixel processing and market-leading low-light image performance”. GP3 also features dedicated cores for scene recognition and subject detection. GoPro says that, as a result, GP3-powered cameras can “understand their environment in real-time and adjust camera settings automatically”.

Teaser video

At the launch, GoPro released some sample images from its next-generation GP3-powered cameras, followed a few weeks later by the first video samples. Now the company has released a second short teaser video. It features cinematic shots of cars racing across a desert at golden hour and a city street at night. There is also a shot of a forest in daylight and a freediver in the deep blue of an underwater setting.

GoPro has said that the GP3 will “usher in a new era of professional-level image quality, low-light performance, resolution and frame rates for small form-factor camera markets”. It suggests that the technology will be used across action cameras, 360 cameras, vlogging cameras, and ultra-premium, compact cinema-grade cameras.

GoPro’s founder and CEO, Nicholas Woodman, announced, “Our customers have made it clear they want more of everything from GoPro—larger sensors, world class low-light performance, higher resolutions and frame rates, next level image quality, improved audio capabilities, longer runtimes and bulletproof reliability in high heat conditions…everything, and more. And that’s exactly what we’re giving them with our newest line of GP3-powered cameras, debuting at NAB this April”.

What we think

GoPro’s teaser videos for its cameras with the new GP3 processor have been impressive. Although blink-and-miss-them short, the clips hint at cinematic colors and dynamic range. The improved levels of thermal performance could also deliver higher resolutions and frame rates.

Additionally, the advanced AI NPU promises even better low-light images. The images and videos that GoPro has shared have created a lot of excitement and anticipation. Thankfully, we only have a couple more weeks to wait to see the first cameras powered by the GP3 processor ready for release.

Availability

NAB 2026 runs from April 19 to April 22 in Las Vegas. GoPro will be at Booth C5519 demonstrating its new GP3-powered cameras.
