GoPro announces MAX2 8K 360 camera

GoPro has announced a new 360-degree camera. The company says that the GoPro MAX2 is the only True 8K 360 video capture camera on the market, capturing up to 21% more resolution than the competition.

True 8K

The GoPro MAX2 delivers full range 10-bit color in True 8K as well as GP Log encoding. This captures over one billion colors for more realism and smoother gradations in your videos. Shooting in GP Log also maximizes the dynamic range, details and post-production flexibility with your MAX2 footage.

Additionally, you can capture 29-megapixel 360 photos. You can crop, zoom, and reframe these ultra-high resolution images to create the exact shot you want via the GoPro Quik App. There are new In-Camera POV and Selfie Video Modes so you can capture your point-of-view or perfectly framed selfie-shots during your favorite activities as well.

360 audio

The GoPro MAX2 features an industry-leading six microphones for true-to-life 360 audio results. It additionally offers “Audio Field-of-View” and 360 stereo audio with advanced wind-noise reduction, along with wireless Bluetooth functionality.

GoPro says that the MAX2 will be getting 360 ambisonic audio support soon.

Design and mounting

GoPro says that the MAX2 has a low-profile, more aerodynamic design that is ideally suited for pole, helmet, body, and vehicle mounting. The camera is also waterproof and designed for high-impact use in a wide range of conditions.

And the MAX2 features Twist-and-Go replaceable lenses made from extremely durable, water-repelling optical glass. These lenses are easy to remove and replace, with no tools or calibration necessary.

Other features

GoPro says that the MAX2 is the only 360 camera with built-in GPS. The MAX2 uses a 1960 mAh Cold-Weather Enduro Battery. This delivers exceptional performance in a wide range of temperatures, ensuring you get the shot no matter the conditions.

Also, there are 16 new mounts and accessories designed specifically for GoPro’s 360 cameras, including the MAX2. This gives you invisible mounting, drone-like footage and more iconic 360 perspectives with ease.

GoPro Labs

You can unlock up to 300Mbps bitrate and additional advanced camera settings with MAX2’s free, optional GoPro Labs firmware update. GoPro Labs gives advanced features and capabilities that go beyond what most average users may want. The AI-powered Quik app software looks to deliver easy 360 editing, including AI Object Tracking. You can perform MotionFrame editing of 360 content by simply panning your phone to edit.

GoPro subscribers enjoy unlimited cloud storage of their 360 footage, so you can use the Quik App to edit your footage in the cloud.

What we think

The GoPro MAX2 is another great option in the world of 360 cameras. Its 10-bit 8K video should deliver high-resolution cinematic images. The option to shoot in log formats makes it easier to color grade your videos for the best results.

Plus, the Quik app makes it quick and easy to edit your videos and photos to make the most of your 360 content. Whether you are looking to get into 360 video for the first time or upgrade your current camera, the GoPro MAX2 is a strong contender.

Pricing and availability

You can preorder the GoPro MAX2 $499 on GoPro.com. The company says preorders will ship from September 30, and the MAX2 should also land on retailers’ shelves the same day.
