Fujifilm has announced a new power zoom lens for its large-format GFX mirrorless cameras. The Fujifilm Fujinon GF19-35mm T3.5 PZ OIS WR also features optical image stabilization.
Design
The GF19-35mm has standard 0.8-pitch geared rings for focus, zoom and aperture. Because it’s a power zoom lens, a rocker switch changes the focal length. Physical switches set image stabilization, zoom mode (powered or manual) and focus mode (auto or manual). Another switch locks the iris ring. The lens weighs 4.6 pounds (2,090 g). It measures 8.8 inches (222.5 mm) long and 4.9 inches (123.5 mm) in diameter.
Optical construction
The GF19-35mm covers a focal length equivalent to 15-28mm on a full-frame camera. It uses 23 elements in 15 groups, including four ED (extra-low dispersion) elements and three aspherical elements. A Nano GI coating suppresses flare and ghosting, and Fujifilm says the optical design keeps focus breathing in check.
Constant aperture
The GF19-35mm has a constant maximum aperture of T3.5. A constant aperture is essential for video, since your exposure won’t shift when you change focal length. The 13-bladed iris stays nearly circular, according to Fujifilm, so out-of-focus areas render as smooth, rounded bokeh.
Image stabilization and auto focus
The GF19-35mm features optical image stabilization (OIS). Fujifilm says the OIS system sharpens motion-sensing accuracy and optimizes the stabilization mechanism for better results. The company also calls the autofocus fast, smooth and precise. For manual work, the geared focus ring offers a 200-degree throw for fine control.
Other features
Fujifilm gave the GF19-35mm the same exterior dimensions as the GF32-90mm T3.5 PZ OIS WR, with matching placements for the focus, zoom and iris rings. That means you can swap between the two lenses without changing your rig setup. Together they cover a focal length range from 19 mm to 90 mm. The 19-35mm also has dust- and weather-resistant construction for demanding shoots.
What we think
Fujifilm’s GFX Eterna 55 is an impressive filmmaking camera. It delivers 8K video with a unique look thanks to its large-format 102MP sensor. However, a camera is only as good as the glass you put in front of it. The GF19-35mm promises top image quality along with autofocus and power zoom control. You still get geared rings for focus, zoom and iris when you’d rather work manually. The lens also pairs with Fujifilm’s 32-90mm to extend your focal range. If you shoot on a Fujifilm GFX large-format camera, the GF19-35mm is a must-have.
Pricing and availability
Fujifilm says the GF19-35mm will be available at the end of July. It will retail for $5,499.
