Fujifilm has announced the firmware roadmap for the Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55 large-format filmmaking camera. Three updates are already scheduled, and between them they add more anamorphic de-squeeze options plus automatic ND filter adjustment.
Large format sensor
The Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55 8K cinema camera is built around a 102 MP CMOS II HS sensor measuring 43.8 x 32.9 mm. That sensor delivers 14.5 stops of dynamic range along with dual native ISO. A variable ND filter is built into the body.
Video capture tops out at 8K DCI. You also get 4K48 4:3 Open Gate and 6.3K24 Super 35, plus a choice from five primary formats: GF, Premista, 35mm, Anamorphic 35mm and Super 35mm. Codec options cover ProRes 422, H.265 and H.264. The camera records proxy files too.
Firmware version 1.10
The first update on the roadmap landed July 15 and is available now. Fujifilm says the camera’s “overall operational stability and usability have been updated to provide a refined shooting experience.” It follows the 1.02, 1.04 and 1.06 releases.
Firmware version 1.20
Version “1.20 or later” arrives sometime in 2026. Fujifilm hasn’t committed to anything more specific.
The headline feature is a wider set of anamorphic de-squeeze options, including Open Gate 4K 4:3. The update also adds in-camera playback of MXF (Material eXchange Format) files. A dedicated app will handle backing up and restoring your camera settings. Rounding it out, Fujifilm is cutting SDI and HDMI video latency further, picking up where firmware 1.04 left off.
Firmware version 1.30
Fujifilm again describes the final scheduled release as “firmware version 1.30 or later.” The big addition is automatic in-camera adjustment of the electronic variable ND filter density, which holds iris, shutter angle and ISO steady as light levels shift. Extra presets will cover coarse ND adjustments.
LANC (Local Application Control Bus System) support arrives in the same update. The multifunction dials on the body and the handle will also control Fujifilm’s Duvo series lenses.
What we think
The large-format sensor is what sets the GFX Eterna 55 apart, and Fujifilm just announced a new wide angle zoom lens to pair with it. The roadmap gives current owners a clear picture of how the camera will grow and roughly when. It could pull in a few shooters still sitting on the fence.
Auto ND is the feature to watch. On a high-end set, somebody else pulls ND. Shooting solo or with a skeleton crew, that job is yours, so handing it to the camera is worth more than the spec sheet suggests. Plenty more is coming from the Eterna 55.
