Fujifilm fully unveils its GFX Eterna 55 8K cinema camera

In November 2024, Fujifilm announced its first filmmaking camera and revealed that it would have a large-format sensor. The company released further details of the camera in March this year. Now Fujifilm has fully unveiled the Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55 8K cinema camera.

Large format sensor

The Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55 8K cinema camera features a 43.8 x 32.9 mm large format 102 MP CMOS II HS sensor. It’s also powered by Fujifilm’s X-Processor 5 high-speed image processing engine. This is the same sensor and processor as in the company’s flagship GFX100 II still photography camera.

In addition, the sensor delivers 14.5 stops of dynamic range and offers dual native ISO. The camera has a built-in variable ND filter as well.

The Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55 8K cinema camera can capture footage in five primary formats: GF, Premista, 35mm, Anamorphic 35mm and Super35mm. You can shoot videos in resolutions up to 8K DCI. The camera also supports 4K48 4:3 Open Gate and 6.3K24 Super 35. The available codecs include ProRes 422, H.265, H.264 and the ability to record proxy files.

Additionally, the camera offers F-Log2 and twenty different Film Simulation modes.

Other features

The Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55 8K cinema camera features 16:9 and 3-inch 3:2 touchscreen LCD screens. It also offers Fuji G and Arri PL lens mount options. The camera has CFexpress and SD card slots for recording media as well as a USB-C port. It can also output 10-bit uncompressed 12-bit Raw video via HDMI.

What we think

Fujifilm has been teasing the specifications of the GFX Eterna 55 8K cinema camera over the past year. Now we finally have the full details of the camera, and it doesn’t disappoint. The camera’s 8K large-format video images should look stunning. The ability to record open gate also opens up the prospect of large-format anamorphic shooting. If there’s one disappointment, it’s that the GFX Eterna 55 doesn’t appear to offer image stabilization. However, it still promises to be a very exciting camera. Hopefully, Fujifilm will release some sample footage from the GFX Eterna 55 8K cinema camera soon.

Pricing and availability

Fujifilm has not announced the price or release date of the GFX Eterna 55 8K cinema camera at the time of writing.
