Fujifilm announces lightweight X-M5 mirrorless digital camera

Fujifilm has announced the latest model in its X Series of APS-C sensor mirrorless digital cameras. The new Fujifilm X-M5 is also the lightest X series camera, but it still delivers some great video features.

Compact size

Fujifilm has designed the X-M5 as a carry with you every day camera. Weighing just 12.5 ounces (355 g), it’s ideal for first-time digital camera users as well as more experienced photographers and videographers. The X-M5 is also compact, measuring just 4.4 inches (111.9 mm) wide, 2.6 inches (66.6 mm) high and only 1.5 inches (38 mm) deep. In addition, you get a three-inch vari-angle LCD touchscreen for controlling the camera and composing your shots.

APS-C sensor

The X-M5 features the back-illuminated 26.1-megapixel X-Trans CMOS 4 APS-C image sensor and X-Processor 5 high speed image processing engine. This delivers Face and Eye autofocus (AF) as well as high tracking performance for moving subjects thanks to its AF predictive algorithm. In addition, the subject detection AF uses AI technology to identify animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes, trains, insects and drones.

Video

The Fujifilm X-M5 is packed with some very impressive video features. At the highest resolution, you can shoot open gate 6.2K 10-bit 4:2:2 with a 3:2 aspect ratio up to 30p. The camera also offers 4K DCI up to 60p and 1080 HD up to 240p for great slow motion. You can store your files on SD cards up to 2 TB in capacity. In addition, the X-M5 is compatible with Blackmagic Design’s Video Assist so you can record BRAW externally via HDMI.

The Fujifilm X-M5 features a Vlog mode with an interface that aims to makes video recording intuitive and enjoyable. It’s perfect for anyone new to content creation. In addition, the X-M5 has a new Short Movie mode. With this, you can shoot clips of 15, 30 or 60 seconds in 9:16 vertical format without having to turn the camera on its side. You even get an on-screen timer to count down the time remaining for each clip.

Audio

For audio, the Fujifilm X-M5 has three built-in microphones, which is a first for Fujifilm’s digital camera lineup. This means that you can choose from four microphone directivity options: surround, front, back or front and back. Another first is the steady-state noise reduction function which you can use to remove background noise at a set frequency, such an air conditioner. The X-M5 also has 3.5 mm connectors for an external microphone and headphones for monitoring.

Other features

The Fujifilm X-M5 includes 20 film simulation modes that you can switch between with a control dial on top of the camera. These modes aim to simulate the look of Fujifilm color science from its range of celluloid film stocks. The camera also features digital image stabilization which Fujifilm says can reduce shaky video when even you are walking while shooting. In addition, you can buy an optional cooling fan that attaches without a cable to increase recording times.

What we think

The Fujifilm X-M5 packs some impressive video features. The ability to shoot open gate 6.2K 10-bit and 4K DCI video internally is a huge bonus at this price point. In addition, the Vlog Short Movie mode is ideal for anyone creating a lot of 9:16 content. The only downside to the camera is the potential for overheating. However, the X-M5 includes a long play mode that crops the image slightly but increases recording times. Alternatively, you can use the cooling fan accessory. The Fujifilm X-M5 is a great camera for content creators, whether you are experienced or a complete beginner. It would also be great as a B camera, delivering high-quality video in a very compact form factor

Pricing and availability

The Fujifilm X-M5 mirrorless digital camera will be available from the middle of November. It will retail at $799 for the body only or $899 with Fujifilm’s 5-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ lens.
