DZOFilm has revealed the pricing for its new DZOFilm Pavo 2X anamorphic lenses. The new lenses are designed for Super 35 sensor cameras. The Pavo 2X lenses also come with interchangeable PL and EF mounts as standard for maximum flexibility.
Focal lengths
There are six lenses in the Pavo 2X series with focal lengths of 28 mm, 32 mm, 40 mm, 55 mm, 75 mm and 100 mm. All the lenses also have a fast T2.1 maximum aperture except for the 100 mm which is slightly slower at T2.4. The 28 mm lens has 14 iris blades and the others all have 16. In addition, close focus distances range from 16 inches (0.4 m) for the 28 mm and 32 mm lenses, to just over 3 feet (0.95 m) for the 100 mm lens. The Pavo 2X lenses all have the same focus throw of 270 degrees while the aperture ring throw ranges from 58 to 79 degrees.
Anamorphic features
The Pavo 2X anamorphic lenses have a 2x compressive factor. This means that if you shoot with a 4:3 sensor, the resulting video, after being desqueezed, will have a wide 2.66:1 aspect ratio. This can also be cropped to a more standard 2.39:1 ratio video. In addition, if you use a full 16:9 sensor, the de-squeezed video will be super wide at over 3.5:1. One of the most sought after features of anamorphic lenses is the long horizontal lens flares. The Pavo 2X lenses are available with a blue or neutral coating to generate horizontal blue flares or flares with the color of the light source.
Build
DZOFilm designed the Pavo 2X anamorphic lenses with all-metal bodies in a distinctive black and space gray color scheme. The lenses have a consistent front diameter of 3.74 inches (95 mm) and a filter size of 86mm. For anamorphic lenses, the Pavo 2X series are also relatively lightweight. The weights range from 42.4 ounces (1203 g) for the 28mm to 58.3 ounces (1654 g) for the 100 mm. In addition, the lenses feature a built-in back-focus adjustment system. This means you can precisely adjust the lenses for sharp focus when adapting to different cameras or changing mounts.
What we think
The DZOFilm Pavo 2X anamorphic lenses are great for video makers who use Super 35 sensor cameras. The ability to switch between PL and EF mounts is a very useful feature included in the box. The EF mount can also be easily adapted for use with L, E or RF mount cameras. Their weight and size mean that the Pavo 2X lenses are suitable for use with gimbals and even drones for impactful anamorphic shots. In addition, the relatively short close focus distances mean that you can get dramatic close up shots of your subjects. If you have a full-frame camera, you can use the optional DZOFilm Marlin 1.6X Expander with the Pavo 2X lenses.
