DJI launches Osmo Mobile 8 smartphone gimbal with Intelligent Subject Tracking

DJI has launched its latest smartphone gimbal, the Osmo Mobile 8. The new gimbal features 360-degree horizontal pan rotation and intelligent subject tracking.

Design

DJI says that the Osmo Mobile 8 gimbal features an ultra-comfortable grip for capturing low-angle shots. You can also tilt the pan axis forward for low-angle filming. The gimbal has a built-in extension rod, which is ideal for selfies. There’s a built-in tripod that you can unfold for stable filming when you need it as well.

The Osmo Mobile 8 will run for up to 10 hours on a single charge. You can even use the gimbal’s USB-C port to charge your smartphone. Weighing just 13 ounces (370 g), the Osmo Mobile 8 won’t feel heavy, even on a long day of filming.

360-degree horizontal rotation

The Osmo Mobile 8 is the first Osmo Mobile gimbal that supports 360° horizontal rotation in the pan axis. The gimbal also uses DJI’s 7th-gen stabilization, which the company says makes capturing vertical, circular, and spinning moves more intuitive. You can quickly switch between the front and rear cameras on your smartphone with the gimbal. In addition, three presses on the gimbal’s trigger rotate the phone so that your smartphone’s rear camera faces you for higher quality selfies. This means that you can effortlessly switch between yourself and the scenery at the same high-resolution image quality.

Subject tracking

The Osmo Mobile 8 gimbal features three different subject-tracking options. If you are using an iPhone, you can track subjects using the Apple DockKit, which is Apple’s intelligent subject-tracking. With the Osmo Mobile 8 Multifunctional Module, you can now track dogs and cats as well as humans. This means the gimbal is ideal for filming your pets on the move.

Also, using the DJI Mimo app for iOS and Android enables ActiveTrack 7.0. This is DJI’s proprietary advanced tracking technology and can now track people, pets, or objects. With Dual Lens Boost, the app also uses both your phone’s wide-angle and telephoto lenses together to ensure you don’t lose your subject.

Multifunctional Module

The Multifunctional Module attaches to the Osmo Mobile 8 with a magnetic clip and offers a lot more than subject tracking. It has a built-in fill light with eight levels of brightness and eight levels of color temperature. You can quickly and simply move through the settings with the module’s side wheel. There’s also a microphone receiver built into the module. It’s compatible with the DJI Mic 3, DJI Mic 2 and DJI Mic Mini transmitters, so you can capture crystal-clear sound for your livestreams and vlogs.

Plus, the Multifunctional Module delivers gesture control to take photos, start or stop recording, activate tracking or adjust a composition.

What we think

The DJI Osmo Mobile 8 is a feature-packed gimbal and great value for money. The built-in extension rod and tripod make filming yourself super easy. Gesture control also means that you don’t need someone to operate your phone when you are in front of the camera. Additionally, the new tracking modes and DJI’s renowned tracking technology mean your shots will be smooth and cinematic. If you are a content creator who shoots with a smartphone, the DJI Osmo Mobile 8 is an ideal way to increase the production value of your videos.
