DJI launches new RS 5 gimbal with enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module

DJI has launched a new lightweight commercial camera gimbal for videographers. The DJI RS 5 gimbal supports a new enhanced RS Intelligent Tracking Module. DJI also says that the new gimbal delivers enhanced stability and a longer runtime.

RS Intelligent Tracking Module

DJI first introduced the RS Intelligent Tracking Module with its RS 4 Mini gimbal. However, the new module has been updated so that you can now frame live footage and track any subject from the touchscreen on the RS 5. You can also track vehicles, pets and other objects, not just people with the new RS Intelligent Tracking Module. In addition, if the subject leaves the frame, the module will re-acquire them for tracking when they come back into shot. The RS Intelligent Tracking Module attaches magnetically so you can quickly and easily achieve complicated camera movements following your subject.

5th generation stabilization algorithm

The RS 5 gimbal features DJI’s 5th generation RS stabilization algorithm which improves peak motor torque by 50%. This ensures greater stability in fast moving scenes such as when you are walking or running. It also delivers greater stability when you are shooting vertically. The gimbal features new fully-adjustable fine-tuning knobs with Teflon interlayers on each axis arm so that you can precisely balance your camera.

The RS 5 can carry a payload of up to 3 kg (6.6 pounds) which makes it suitable for use with a wide range of mirrorless camera and lens combinations. The gimbal weighs 1.46 kg (3.2 pounds) with the battery grip and quick release plates.

Battery life

The standard battery grip for the DJI RS 5 gimbal lasts up to 14 hours so it will easily last a long day on set. It only takes an hour to fully recharge the battery with a 65W PD charger so you will never be out of action for long. This is a 60% improvement in charging efficiency compared to the previous model RS 4.

Also, you can buy an optional BG70 High-Capacity Battery Grip which extends the runtime of the RS 5 to an impressive 30 hours.

Other features

The new DJI RS 5 Electronic Briefcase Handle offers joystick or button controls for easy one-handed operation. This means that you can capture high or low level shots while retaining electronic control of the gimbal. There is also a new on-screen Z-axis indicator to guide you to adjust your gait and pace to achieve smoother and steadier shots. Additionally, the RS 5 gimbal features the 2nd generation automated axis locks and 3rd generation native vertical switch from DJI’s flagship gimbals. DJI says that it has expanded camera compatibility for wireless control. As a result, the RS 5’s Bluetooth shutter now supports Panasonic and Fujifilm cameras, as well a previously supported models from Sony, Canon and Nikon.

What we think

The RS 5 gimbal is an exciting new release from DJI. Its improved RS Intelligent Tracking Module can track more than just people as with the previous version on the RS 4 Mini. You can also track your subject from the gimbal’s touchscreen.

Plus, the improved stabilization algorithms should deliver smoother footage than ever before. The fast charging and 14 hour battery life mean that the RS 5 will see you through a long day of filming as well. If you are looking to get a new gimbal, and your camera is within the payload capacity, the DJI RS 5 may be the ideal gimbal for you.

Pricing and availability

The DJI RS 5 gimbal is available to purchase around the world now. However, there is currently no official U.S. launch date. At the time of writing, B&H is listing the DJI RS 5 Gimbal Combo Kit with AI Tracking Module and Briefcase Handle as coming soon at $719.
