SIGMA has announced a compact full-frame 50 mm prime. The SIGMA 50mm F1.4 CL DG | Contemporary comes in L-Mount and Sony E-mount versions. Both mounts get a black body, while a silver option is available for L-Mount only.
Design
The all-metal lens measures 2.5 inches (64.7 mm) across. It runs 2.1 inches (54 mm) long in L-Mount and 2.2 inches (56 mm) in Sony E-mount. Both versions weigh 13.2 oz (375 g). The knurled hood, focus ring and aperture ring give it a stylish, retro look, and a magnetic lens cap comes in the box. Filters thread on at 52 mm.
Optical design
Inside, the lens uses nine elements in six groups. One is FLD (F Low Dispersion) glass and three are aspherical. SIGMA says the placement of the aspherical elements keeps ghosting in check, a tough problem for small, light lenses. Aberrations stay under control too. Minimum focus distance is 17.8 inches (45 cm).
New Rotary Direct Drive actuator
SIGMA chose whole-lens extension focusing over an inner focus design to keep the lens short. The company also built a Rotary Direct Drive autofocus actuator, with coils and magnets arranged in a ring to match the barrel. SIGMA says this keeps the diameter slim while delivering high torque.
Video shooters should note that the lens extends as it focuses. Expect the balance to shift a little on a gimbal.

Instant MF switching
The actuator drives the focusing optics directly, so you can jump between autofocus and manual focus instantly. Turn the focus ring while in autofocus and the lens hands control to you. No switch needed. That makes it easy to fix a missed focus mid-shot.
Wide maximum aperture
The F1.4 maximum aperture is built for low light and a very shallow depth of field. A 14-blade iris shapes smooth, round bokeh. SIGMA says the lens shows its richest three-dimensional look wide open at F1.4.
Other features
A distance scale runs from minimum focus distance to infinity. A depth-of-field scale shows how sharpness changes as you stop down. Dust- and splash-resistant construction keeps you shooting in rough weather, and a water- and oil-repellent coating protects the front surface. SIGMA notes the lens isn’t waterproof.
What we think
Image quality should always drive a lens purchase, and we haven’t tested this one yet. On paper, the SIGMA 50mm F1.4 CL DG | Contemporary looks promising. The vintage styling is easy to like, and the F1.4 aperture suits low-light and shallow depth-of-field work.
The Rotary Direct Drive motor is the feature video shooters should watch. It helps keep the lens compact. It also allows the instant switch between autofocus and manual focus, a welcome change for anyone who has fumbled with a focus mode switch on a live shoot. At 13.2 oz (375 g), the lens is light enough for a small mirrorless rig or gimbal.
SIGMA hasn’t announced a price, so the value case is still open.
Pricing and availability
Sigma plans to release the 50mm F1.4 CL DG | Contemporary in early spring 2027 through authorized dealers. The company says it will announce retail pricing later.
