Canon’s PowerShot V1 is a compact camera designed for video

Alongside the Canon EOS R50 V, Canon also launched the new Canon PowerShot V1 compact digital camera. It’s another camera aimed primarily at video content creators rather than still photographers.

Sensor

The Canon PowerShot V1 has a new 1.4-inch 22.3-megapixel CMOS sensor. This is smaller than the APS-C sensor in the EOS R50 V and is closer in size to a Micro Four Thirds sensor. As a result, the built-in 8.2-25.6mm zoom lens has a similar field of view to a 17-52mm lens on a full-frame camera when you are shooting view.

For still photos, the equivalent focal length is 16-50 mm. The maximum aperture is f/2.8 at the wide-angle end of the zoom range and f/4.5 when zoomed in.

Autofocus

The PowerShot V1 features Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus system. This supports tracking for people and animals. You can also focus as close as only two inches (50 mm) at the widest focal length.

4K video

The Canon PowerShot V1 can record 4K UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels) using the full sensor up to 29.97 fps (30p). You can also shoot 4K video up to 59.94 fps (60p) using a 1.4x crop from the sensor. In 1080 Full HD, the highest frame rate is 119.88 fps (120p) for super slow-motion playback.

In addition, the PowerShot V1 features active cooling with a built-in fan. As a result, you can film 4K at 60p for two hours or more, and at 4K 30p or in HD, there are no recording limits.

Other video features

The PowerShot V1 supports recording videos in the Canon Log 3 color profile for greater dynamic range and latitude when color grading in post-production. There’s also a movie-specific digital image stabilization option as well as optical stabilization in the lens. Interestingly for a compact camera, the PowerShot V1 features a built-in ND filter. This means that you can shoot with a wider aperture in bright conditions for a shallow depth of field.

Audio

The Canon PowerShot V1 has a built-in stereo microphone on the top of the body. This features noise reduction, and Canon supplies a dead kitten style wind shield to help improve your audio. You can also use an external mic via the hot shoe or the 3.5 mm socket.

Also, the PowerShot V1 has a headphone socket so that you can monitor your audio.

Other features

The Canon PowerShot V1 has a three-inch vari-angle 1.04-million dot LCD touch screen for composing your shots. It’s a compact camera, measuring 4.7 inches (118.3 mm) by 2.7 inches (68 mm) by 1.8 inches (45.2 mm). The PowerShot V1 also weighs only 15 ounces (426 g) so it won’t be heavy to carry around. Additionally, the camera supports UVC/UAC for livestreaming and video calls.

What we think

The Canon PowerShot V1 is a great camera for vlogging and content creation. It looks to be Canon’s response to Sony’s popular ZV-1 Mark II and matches its competitor well. The PowerShot V1 offers recordings at 60p in 4K, while the ZV-1 is limited to only 30p. However, the Sony camera has a slightly wider maximum aperture for better low-light performance. For content creators who want the benefits of a proper camera rather than a smartphone but aren’t ready for a mirrorless camera just yet, the Canon PowerShot V1 is an ideal choice.

Pricing and availability

The Canon PowerShot V1 is scheduled to be available in April 2025 with a retail price of $899.
