The Canon EOS R50 V features a 24.2 MP APS-C CMOS image sensor. It is also powered by the DIGIC X image processor. The EOS R50 V uses the RF mount, so it is compatible with all RF and RF-S mount lenses. Also, the camera supports Dual Pixel CMOS AF II for quiet and smooth autofocus.

Compact design

Canon describes the EOS R50 V as “a movie-focused, high-performance camera that can fit in the palm of your hand.” Its compact body measures just 4.7 inches (119.3 mm) by 2.9 inches (73.7 mm) by 1.8 inches (45.2 mm). The EOS R50 V is also lightweight at just 11.4 ounces (323g) for the body only.

In addition, the camera has a tripod socket on the grip side of the camera for vertical video, as well as one on the base. With the power zoom lever on top of the camera, you can operate power zoom lenses such as the RF14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens.

Video recording

The EOS R50 V records 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) video oversampled from 6K recording up to 29.97 fps. You can also shoot up to 59.94 fps with a 4K crop of the sensor.

If you drop the resolution to 1080 HD, you can film up to 119.88 fps for super-slow motion. You can choose between recording to 8-bit 4:2:0 H.264 files or 10-bit 4:2:2 H.265 files.

Cinema EOS

Canon says that the EOS R50 V blends some of the best features of the Cinema EOS and EOS camera lines. The new camera also promises image creation consistent with Cinema EOS cameras and includes five presets for editing, such as Canon Log 3. Additionally, the EOS R50 V offers advanced exposure tools such as false color and zebras.

Audio

The EOS R50 V features a built-in microphone with separate left and right stereo inputs. There’s also a 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack so that you can use an external microphone. Alternatively, you can add a digital mic input, such as the Canon DM-E1D stereo microphone, via the camera’s multi-function shoe. Also, the EOS R50 V has a 3.5mm headphone socket for monitoring your audio.

Other features

The EOS R50 V features a 3.0-inch LCD touch screen monitor which can be flipped forward when filming selfies. There’s also a new color filter mode that adds 14 different color options to change the mood of your videos.

You can connect an external monitor via an HDMI micro terminal, and there’s a clean HDMI output available as well. And the EOS R50 V supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and has built-in wireless livestreaming.

What we think

Canon describes the R50 V as the first EOS V series camera body. The new camera is clearly designed primarily for video use, although you can shoot still photographs as well. With features such as Canon Log 3, false color, and zebras, you are getting some professional video options at a great price. Although Canon has pitched the EOS R50 V at content creators, it could be a great low-cost B camera to use alongside a Cinema EOS camera. The Canon EPOS R50 V is set to be a very popular choice for video shooters.

Pricing and availability

Canon says that the EOS R50 V mirrorless camera is scheduled to be available in April 2025. It will retail at $649 for the body only and $849 with the RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens.
