ASUS ProArt monitors calibrate themselves without software

ASUS has announced two new ProArt monitors designed for content creators. The 26.5-inch ASUS ProArt Display PA27USD and 31.5-inch PA32USD are both 4K QD-OLED monitors.

Brightness and contrast

The ASUS ProArt Display OLED PA27USD and PA32USD monitors deliver a peak brightness of 1,000 nits. However, this is limited to 3% of the screen in HDR mode. Typical brightness is rated at 250 nits. The monitors also offer a maximum contrast ratio of 1,500,000:1.

Both displays support up to a 240Hz refresh rate and variable-refresh-rate (VRR) technology, so creators can work on fast-rendering visuals and run quality checks on a single screen.

True-to-life color

The ASUS ProArt Display PA27USD and PA32USD monitors exceed industry color reproduction standards. They deliver 99% DCI-P3, 100% sRGB and 100% Rec.709 color gamuts, so you can rely on them when color grading your videos. The monitors also feature true 10-bit color depth, which means they can display more than 1.07 billion colors. However, you will need a graphics card that supports 10-bit video output to drive them. Both the PA27USD and PA32USD support multiple HDR formats, including Dolby Vision, HLG and HDR10.

Color calibration

ASUS says it uses a three-scale color calibration process in the factory to ensure the new monitors deliver exceptional color fidelity. The monitors also undergo testing using ASUS’s advanced grayscale tracking technology. This ensures smoother color gradations, better uniformity and high color accuracy with a Delta E < 1 color difference value.

Built-in colorimeter

The ProArt Display PA27USD and PA32USD monitors include a built-in colorimeter, which ASUS says has an “innovative self-calibration feature.” It’s a standalone solution that doesn’t need any additional calibration software, making it compatible with any operating system. You can also run the calibration process at any time, or schedule it for a time when you won’t be using the monitors.

ProArt Hardware Calibration technology saves the color parameter profiles to the monitor’s internal scaler IC chip. This means the calibration is maintained across different operating systems and apps.

Connectivity

The ASUS ProArt Display OLED PA27USD and PA32USD monitors feature dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, plus HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1 connections. One of the Thunderbolt 4 ports offers up to 96W of Power Delivery over a single cable to keep laptops charged. You also get one 12G-SDI input on the PA27USD and two 12G-SDI inputs with the PA32USD. These support uncompressed video signals at up to 4K at 60Hz. The two monitors also have an integrated USB 3.2 hub with two USB Type-A ports and one USB Type-C port.

Design

The ASUS ProArt Display OLED PA27USD and PA32USD monitors offer two stand options to fit your setup. Alongside a regular stand, you can opt for a mini stand that features two short feet on the base of the monitor. There’s also a wraparound hood that minimizes reflections and other distractions. The hood has an opening at the top in case you want to use a third-party colorimeter.

Both monitors feature clips for cable management and a metal handle for when you need to move them around. You can also get the PA27USD in a Panaro MAX Rugged Case Edition for extra protection out on set.

What we think

Every editor wants to know that the colors in their videos are right. The new ProArt Display OLED PA27USD and PA32USD from ASUS promise the color accuracy you need to be confident in your work. Both monitors also deliver 10-bit 4K images, which are essential for accurate editing of high-resolution video and still images. The built-in colorimeter means you can continue to rely on the monitor long after its factory calibration.

The ASUS ProArt Display OLED PA27USD and PA32USD monitors are significant investments. However, the peace of mind that your videos will look great wherever they are viewed can be priceless.

Pricing and availability

The regular ASUS ProArt Display OLED PA27USD monitor and the Panaro MAX Rugged Case Edition are scheduled for release this month. They will cost $2,199 and $2,599, respectively. The ProArt Display OLED PA32USD monitor is set to ship next month for $2,699.
