Apple may release a new iMac soon

According to a recent Bloomberg report, Apple is getting ready to announce a new range of computers. The new products will include laptops, desktops and a new iMac.

Product development

The iMac is Apple’s all-in-one desktop computer with a thin screen. The current model has an M1 chip and was announced nearly two years ago in April 2021. As such the iMac is due for a refresh. Apparently, the new iMac is currently going through engineering validation testing which is an advanced stage of development. The new models have the codenames J433 and J434.

Specification

As the new iMac is still in development most of the specifications are still unknown. However, it is believed that the new machines will have a 24-inch screen as with the current model. The 2021 iMac is powered by an M1 chip but it seems that the new model will come with a new M-series chip. Some online sources are also reporting that this will be a new M2 chip which will be 25 percent faster than the previous generation.

Design

The computer models going through production testing have had the same colors as the current iMac. This is available with green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue and silver cases. In addition, the internal layout of the new iMac has been changed, with some components relocated. There has also been a change to the way that the stand is attached to the iMac.

What we think

The iMac has always been a good choice for video work with its M1 chip. However, it maxes out at 16 GB of RAM which can be a restriction if you work with high-resolution video or do VFX with software such as After Effects. The rumored new M-series chip should mean that the new iMac is even more powerful than the current model. Hopefully, the maximum memory capacity will also be increased. It would be great to be able to use up to 128 GB or RAM as with the 27-inch iMac model from 2020.

Availability

Apple is conducting production tests of the new iMac. So, hopefully, it won’t be too long before we get some sort of official announcement. However, the computer isn’t likely to go into mass production before the middle of the year. As such don’t expect to get your hands on one for some time. It will be at least the second half of the year. As soon as we get more news, we’ll let you know.
