Apple has announced the next generation of Apple Intelligence, its on-device AI platform. The update brings a suite of new AI-powered tools to the Photos app, set to launch later this year.
Spatial Reframing
Spatial Reframing is the standout new feature. It lets you change the composition of a shot after the fact by touching and dragging the image, much like repositioning the camera at the moment of capture. The preview updates in real time as you adjust the perspective. Once you’re satisfied, the tool generates the new image.
Apple says Spatial Reframing builds on spatial models developed through Apple Vision Pro.
Extend and Clean Up
The Extend tool lets you expand the borders of a photo — useful when the original framing feels too tight. You can also rotate and straighten an image without the usual crop penalty, or change the aspect ratio entirely. Extend fills in whatever’s missing.
Clean Up is getting a significant upgrade as well. The tool removes unwanted elements from a frame, keeping the focus where you want it.
What we think
Spatial Reframing alone makes this update worth watching. Adjusting a photo’s perspective in post would have sounded far-fetched just a few years ago. How well it performs in real-world conditions remains to be seen, but the demo is compelling.
Worth noting: Apple has confirmed that images edited with Apple Intelligence will automatically carry a hidden SynthID watermark. That means AI-manipulated photos can be identified, which is a meaningful step given growing concerns around image authenticity.
Availability
The new features are currently in testing through the Apple Developer Program, with a public beta arriving next month via the Apple Beta Software Program. Full rollout is planned for this fall alongside iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27. Apple Intelligence will need to be enabled on your device to access them.
